Hi Ron,

As mentioned there is a list of the freq for all bands on the left hand side of the WSPRnet screen.

The 160m freq is 1.8366 MHz USB

I am running 160m WSPR again, after about 10 months leave. RX only at this stage though.

I am sure I've posted up before a link to a great little world wide lightning map :?: Would anyone happen to know the one im talking about ? Ive not been able to find it on google searches yet.

Thanks.

how do you make sure that you don't have a bad signal using wspr mode?

Looking at the ALC (nil at my trx) is that enough?

Listen to a second rx?

Hi Hauke,

I do several things to check on my WSPR signal. First, I keep control over the audio level that I am feeding the transceiver. I do this by adjusting a level pot which is on my home brew interface box, although it is of course possible to use the audio out level control on your computer's mixer. I then watch the RF level and reduce the audio drive until I see a slight reduction in the RF output as indicated by an inline VSWR meter, having set the RF output beforehand. I also listen on another receiver, which I tend to do less nowadays. The ultimate test is really if the distant station hearing your WSPR is able to decode it, which is indicated on the WSPR spots page on WSPR.ORG. The amount of drift you have in your signal is reported on the spotter as well, which is yet another indication of the quality of your signal.

Hi all,

This may be an interest to Leigh VK2KRR.
Propagation on 160m tonight has been very poor, lots of noise (constant) up to S9+10dB on the guess meter  .

The screen captures below show some of the noise (possibly sun/ionospheric disturbance) I got and the effect
it had on signal levels. The first shows the noise on left hand side of display with Leigh's signal down from normal
(normal = -4 to 0dB). The noise subsides for a time and Leigh's signal picks up.

The second one shows noise coming back and Leigh's signal starts to drop again.

Cheers for now.

Hooray! I finally have WSPR working properly! I have v2.11 running, with an OpenHPSDR transceiver.
What complicates things, or simplifies it, depending on your point of view, is that I need to get virtual serial ports and virtual audio cables working, to interface PowerSDR with WSPR (or HRD/DM780, etc.) At last I have WSPR decoding reliably, and sending automatically. I'm just waiting for my WSPRNet login to become active, and I'll be able to report to WSPRNet.
My particular interest is to be able to investigate propagation, and evaluate my 160 m antennas. I have two, a 20 m tall, capacitively loaded vertical radiator over eight 1/4 wave elevated counterpoise radials, and a doublet which is 80 m each side of the feedpoint about 22 m high.
I have reports from VK2KRR and VK6DZ so far.

Good you have WSPR up and running Luke. All aspects of your signal seem quite good here.

Regarding your observations on the other post, I also noticed that VK3AMZ signal was not decoding here most times. The few that did decode, I observed a timing error up to 2.4 sec. So maybe if Arie could get the timing a bit closer to the 0.0 mark it may help.

So that's what the "DT" is. I figured Arie's clock may have been out, as that was my problem with WSPR previously.
Tonight I will start making some objective tests:
1. Vertical vs Horizontal transmit antenna
2. Receive S/N for transmitting antenna vs receiving array.

So far, knowing that I am being received by VK3, VK2 and VK6 is hardly something I could be excited about.

Lee, I see you have spots from France and Netherlands the past few mornings. What is your transmit antenna system?
Looks like you had the spotlight recently. I'm looking for a reason to light up the amp and call CQ at sunrise.

HI Guys

Finally considered using Dimension 4, for NTP updates, not a fan be we'll see how we go? I'll be txing again tonight on 160mx WSPR let me know if I loose time sync. I know my puta time drifts so we'll now see if the DM4 app. keeps time sync for me.

Cheers :D

Arie, I only just switched over, but Im still seeing you at -2.3 sec timing error compared to mine. It has decoded though.

Luke, very good regarding the tests, thats one thing WSPR is good for.
Im TX/RX same antenna, 160m 1/2 wave inverted V, suspended from around 60ft.
I guess you could use my spots as an indicator if something is happening.

Arie, last decode at 1422 with -2.3 DT.
I'm still hearing your signal and CW ident. You were still strong here well after sunrise.
Just loaded and am running Dimension4 to keep in time sync.
Will leave running till morning.
I'm getting a generally better S/N from VK6DZ and VK2KRR when I am transmitting on the vertical antenna.

When first installing D4, don't forget to disable the Windows inbuilt automatic time update feature that usually pings some US based network server, resulting in a few seconds of time delay.

For D4, choose a time server as close to your QTH as possible, to minimise possible timing error. You should then be able to experience digital mode operations without timing error problems. Good luck...

I will come down from 80M which has been interesting but lonely.

Will join ends and line tune to 160M see how it goes.
I see 2M wsppr not so good for some, so holding off buying a radio in case it drifts.
But then tying up a $3000 radio for some is bit dumb.
Sure beats getting piles sitting on ass in chair waiting for DX calls in this shrinking world.

Thanks for the advice Lee.
Not sure what was happening there. Sounded like a loose connection when I tested it. But there are no 'wires' as PowerSDR is connected to WSPR via 'virtual cables'. I restarted WSPR - no change. The 'Tune' button in PowerSDR gave a clean tone. I restarted both WSPR and PowerSDR and it was back to normal. A software problem.
Rather than look for spots from DX on WSPR, I will start getting up at dawn and call CW. Was up too late last night messing about with WSPR. Only DX worked was one JA and KH0 last evening.
Now that I have WSPR working, I expect I may be able to use the other JT modes too.
I still prefer CW for two way DX.

You're strong here on my 80m mobile whip Arie. Good to see Leigh is hearing me too :D Antenna is a 25yo Mobile One 80m whip I bought from DSE a loooong time ago. NH7SR is also hearing me on 80m with it.

For time server, I use: 1.au.pool.ntp.org

There are several "pools", you can change by changing the first number, e.g. 1.au... to 0.au... or 2.au...

For Win7,time sync, I use BktTimeSync by IZ2BKT. He does a few other bits of Ham software, but I've found this one most reliable in Win7.

Arie, on your last TX your signal seems to be being affect by AE. Low level Doppler shifted sigs and lots of flutter. I didn't expect to see that on 160m!
