WSPR 160m

Post by VK2KRR »

G'day folks,

A number of us WSPRers who run on the higher 10 and 6m bands during the day are gathering on the opposite end of the scale at the 160m band at night recently.
There is only a few of us, and it would be great to see if a few other operators could get onto 160m WSPR to provide some further signals and RX reports.
The main stations giving it a go over the past few weeks are -
VK2BLS, VK2KRR, VK3SMC, VK4FIL, VK7AB, VK7DIK,

VK6ZRY may be devising an antenna for use there also. VK3SMC has also been running mobile, and portable, which is interesting. Anyone else who can join in, please do.

 Thunderbirds are GO! on 160m tonight after sundown (quoted from VK2BLS  )

Thanks all for the few extra signals on 160m this evening! Its been much more interesting.
Have had 8 stations so far on Saturday night -

VK2BLS
VK2KRR
VK3SMC
VK4FIL
VK5ACY
VK5PJ
VK6DZ
VK7DIK

Most of the eastern stations passing signals, but finding it hard to grab anything from VK6DZ at present. But DZ is being heard at 5PJ and 7DIK.
 Some pretty cool reception reports -
VK5PJ and VK7DIK have both been able to get decodes from K9PAW in the USA.

Righto. Come one come all to 160m WSPR fri sat and maybe sunday night if your keen (actually every night but the weekdays have more work pressures).

Good signals coming in from Derek VK6DZ last night (Thursday) which was good to see and a few more stations on in the east.

Friday nite 27th May, so far (7.41pm) we have on air -

VK2BLS
VK2KRR
VK3SMC
VK5WR
VK6DZ
VK7AB
VK7DIK

Derek is pushing a signal over to SMC WR and DIK so far with only 10W. No one cracked anything from overseas yet.
Its a good band to be on while the sun dont shine.

Last night saw a few more stations come onto 160m WSPR.

VK1HW, VK2BLS, 2KRR, 3SMC, 3XQ, 5PJ, 5WR, 6DZ, 7AB, 7DIK.

Lots of inter-VK action, and with Peter VK5PJ hearing a couple of stations from Europe early morning, being the only international signals heard.

2011-05-27 20:46 G8HUH 1.838089 -22 -1 IO81mg 5 VK5PJ PF95mk 16463 73

Peter is running an inverted L I believe and gets out well. Also Derek VK6DZ advised that he has installed a new vertical and showed quite an improved signal last night with only 2 earth wires, and a few more yet to be installed.

I might add that the stations RXd by Peter PJ from Europe were only running 5 Watts.

VK2KRR
VK2XN
VK2ZMT
VK3SMC
VK3XQ
VK4FIl
VK5PJ

Many inter VK paths, but there has been a few lucky stations who have heard KB5NJD. VK5PJ, VK3XQ and VK2XN.

Below are some WSPR maps of the activity tonight.

Weak Signal Propagation Reporter's

how do you make sure that you don't have a bad signal using wspr mode?

Looking at the ALC (nil at my trx) is that enough?

Listen to a second rx?

Hi Hauke

I'd personally try listening to another RX rig if you can, or get someone nearby to have a listen for you, make sure it sounds clean. Then if ur getting reports it must be working OK.
There is probably other ways people use to make sure there is a clean signal leaving the rig. I'd be interested to hear them myself.

WSPR 160m

Post by VK5PJ »

Hello,
It would seem my HF rig is drifting quite a bit on TX, can someone send me a screen capture of my signal from the WSPR waterfall that shows my 160M signal so I can get an idea how bad it is (vk8zlx@hotmail.com)

Thanks Leigh,

I monitor the signal on a second rx and watch that the ALC does not come on at all.
BTW it looks like we're 1HZ apart ...

Peter, VK5PJ, yes ur rig does show a little bit of drift, I wasn't decoding it much last night due to that factor. I never kept the screen image, tonight we can get an image for you if needed. I think it would show up similar on 10m if ur on there today.

VK1HW Hauke,
Ive just checked my rig, the ALC comes on to the level it normally would on voice, so I dont think thats anything to worry about.

My understanding is for ANY data mode, you don't want to activate ALC at all. I always set up a carrier into a dummy load for the power I want to run, eg. 5W, then go on air on the data mode and slowly advance the audio drive up until the required 5W of RF is showing, then if ALC shows, then back it off again until no ALC. I can still manage my 5W with zero ALC.

I have seen the results of stations running well into ALC on JT65a on 20m - not pretty!

PS. Heard/decoded nothing on 10m yet!

VK5AYD David joined us on 160m WSPR tonight from the center of South Australia
VK5AYD on 160m WSPR
VK5AYD on 160m WSPR
Also 3 stations (VK2XN, VK3XQ and VK5AYD) were hearing KB5NJD. VK3XQ also heard N2NOM.

Anyone who would like to have a go at WSPR? 160m is probably a nice starting point for getting signals from local stations.
Hope to see a few people on 160m WSPR over the long weekend that would be great
A few of us have already headed up (down) there now.

Loads of stations on 160m WSPR on Saturday night! Most Ive ever seen from VK.
Adding to the excitement was WF7W who was heard my many of the VK stations eventually.
I'll let this screen shot do the talking...

But, congratulations to Derek VK6DZ! Have a look at these excellent paths to the Europe areas!!!
