Hi all....

As I had never decoded JT65 before as I have FLDigi....I used (little understood by me as yet) Multipsk..

What does all this mean....hope it does not break any rules posting this...

Is this a few guys not being able to hear each other...or something else..

Its probably just false decodes. You need to have the program set to certain perameters to stop that.
Also if you delete the callsigns text file from the program it will stop that.
Im a bit busy right now but can help more later if required.

Hi all..

Ok...thanks for that...

I might mess around with it a bit later tonight...not sure about false decodes...as there was a signal there...ok...might see whats online about this...just curious..

Oh.. John I think you need to tell us what band you were using it on?? Im thinking your using it on 144 MHz?

Hi Alll....

The band was on 20m around 14.076.00....give or take...

Found a website that simply explains those headings shown on the RX window....the things ya learn when you take time to read...ahaha

John

P.S...VK4BDJ is on 20m right now using JT65A. 6:17pm AEST

Oh sorry John, I just pressumed you got those on 144 MHz in which case it would have been much more doubtful.

No problem....it made me go online a look around...so now I know a bit more than I did yesterday...

I thought I would give it a look too. There is quite a bit of activity on 20m tonight.

12:05 3 -18 -1.9 -11 K VK4VDX WB3FTQ RRR
12:03 1 -18 -1.4 -11 K VK4VDX WB3FTQ R-06
11:52 6 -21 -1.9 -482 K F4BAL JA1KEV R-22
11:44 4 -20 -1.5 8 K CQ N3PPH FM18
11:42 1 -18 -1.9 -301 K CQ JA7CSS QM09
11:37 1 -14 -1.9 8 B CQ N3PPH FM18
11:35 2 -17 -1.9 8 B CQ N3PPH FM18
11:30 3 -23 1.5 129 K F6DKQ JA1KEV QM06
11:29 4 -18 -0.9 -310 B 9A8W JR6QDW PM51
11:25 2 -27 -1.8 116 K IK2WJT JF4RKC PM64
11:21 2 -20 -1.8 -915 K CQ JF4RKC PM64

I found WSJT to be less than friendly to use, but JT65-HF (http://sourceforge.net/projects/jt65-hf/) is a lot easier to use (from an RX perspective at least), and was picking up alot more signals.

Hi All...

Yeah have heard the activity for a week or so..thought I would try decode some of it..

I did not think many would use it because it is so slow...I have heard people say Olivia is slow and they rather use something faster..

But seems there is some activity for this method....but only for making the actual contact not for a chat....would take 15mins just to exchange basic information...

its all interesting though...

P.S downloaded that JT65-HF version...looks good.....the one thing JT65-HF can do is decode multiple transmissions for the same Minute....probably been discussed elsewhere on the forum in the past.

It always impresses me when you can get type on RX window...but see nothing ( waterfall )and hear nothing.(radio).

Hi all...

With this JT65 mode....I am wondering what power levels are being used here in Australia..

Are stations using the minimum to make a contact....or the old theory that more is Better.

I hear some fairly strong stations using this mode....when I get 10 over from Queensland here in Sydney area I assume more than 15w....but many factors come into play, such as antenna and the like.....so never quite sure...

Hi John,

They are not false decodes. JT65-HF does not make 'educated guesses' from a list like WSJT does. The 10 over 9 VK4 station you refer to is also grossly overdriven. Note how his tone dots on the waterfall are more blurred 'splodges' than distinct points. Unfortunately, his overdriven signal is that strong with me he blanks my receiver so I can't generally Rx in the same period if the other station is close by in the waterfall.

Note also how he calls CQ a lot... I also note that sometimes his CQ's aren't decoded by my PC, as strong as they are, due to the tones being run far into ALC. So if I'm not decoding them 100%, chances are others aren't either. Which may explain why he calls CQ a lot

Apprently he's only running 30W, judging by the "30W HEX TU 73" he's been trying to send to one station for the past futile half hour that is obiously having trouble decoding it.

I have a screen dump somewhere of him and another station at the same Tx period, both -10, but one a nice clean signal and him blurred into overdrive oblivion.

How do you diplomatically tell another station he has an awful signal?

On the other hand, I run 10W, and have no ALC showing on my ALC meter at all, and have worked DX all the way into Europe.

HI all...

Thanks for the reply Rob...we are obviously talking about the same signal so will leave that there....just to say....maybe nobody has actually told him about his signal....I guess that unless someone does he may never know...

Good to see the 10w being used your end and yes I have seen your signal on the waterfall....looks good.....to me thats the whole point of the JT65.....crank it down and see how far you can get....

I was surprised last night.....had it all running while watching some TV and all the JA's and others popping up late at night , just tuning around you would never hear them in the speaker..

Hi John,

The 'hot times' to listen when the band seems to open up to DX is between about 4:30 and 6pm local, and then it picks up again later into the evening, with most of the far European DX rolling in about midnight to 3am local time.

It is, as you say, an amazing mode. To see a decode from something you can barely make out on the waterfall, let alone hear through the rig speaker, is nothing short of some very clever software/audio processing.

You sound as if you haven't got Tx capability? It's easy to set up... if you haven't already you should give JT65a-HF a go - it's great fun and there is some seriously good DX out there!

I have been thinking about trying JT65 for quite some time but have not plucked up the courage (read got PC challenged brain in order) to give it a go.

My old shaky laptop is a limiting factor especialy when it come to the time keeping bit. I am thinking of upgrading it. What would be the best options for a shack laptop to run JY65 and other digital modes? I don't want to spend a mint.

I also came across the following "no frills guide to JT65": http://www.obriensweb.com/bozoguidejt65a.htm

Unfortunately I'm not picking you up Rob. What antenna are you using for JT65 on 14m?

I was getting the other side of your contact.

Hi Robert,

My antenna is a PAR End Fedz end fed dipole. However, on 20m at night I'm not surprised you're not hearing me although I was a comparatively good -13 or so 16,000km+ away in the USA. All to do with my signal being up and gone to the F layer it is being reflected along to the USA, as there is no ground wave propagation mechanism to your location. The first skip distance on 20m at night is around 1,600km. Anything closer than that and it's over your head - so to speak!

Hi alll....

would not worry to much about the Laptop.....that is what I am using....wonder if you can get it connected to the internet...if so you can adjust the time using the options on the clock...

The calling and answering protocal is confusing me a little.....dont see RRR , and the others that were mentioned to often.....tried to follow a few QSO's late ;ast night...but nobody could contact each other...

I understand the buttons are there to just click on....or double click on the decoded message sometimes though people move away from that...only minor issue though not a drama.

Hi John,

Yes, the 'protocol' is embedded in the program for you. See a CQ? Double click and it will answer for you. See your report coming back? Double click on it and it will send the RRR. See a 73 coming back? You can double click on that too - although many like to do a bit of free text to say a bit about antenna / power / 73 (within the constraints of 13 characters!).

For timekeeping if you have internet access on your laptop use Dimension4. Simply brilliant.

Also, with net access you can log your receptions and reverse beacons to aid in populating the map at http://pskreporter.info/pskmap.html and help show the propagation at the time.

Hi all.....

Rob...

While your down this way in the digital section......what is the "TX even' "TX odd' in the program....I have read they used it more for the EME contacts.......but do you just leave it set to a particular setting or do you actually change it..
I understand its a transmit on the even or odd minute....but is it used at all.
