Connecting Laptops for Digital Systems

Hi all,
There is a problem with connecting Laptops to digital gear for running digital modes.
I found this out as my computer was giving crazy gyrations when I connected it.
I measured the voltage between the computer earths and the rig earths and found there was 11 volts AC or 120 voltsAC depending on which way I connected the power cable This was enough to upset the laptop when connected. This voltage is leakage (apparently capacitive ) and is normal.
HOWEVER, the ONLY way to connect the peripherals to a laptop is before you connect it to power.
After you have connected it to the outside world, THEN turn everything on. It makes for a happy Laptop.
