What is you most memorable 6mtr contact/event?

Post by VK4ABW »

My most memorable event was working LU8MB in Argentina via long path during cycle 23. I had just completed the contact (approx 1am in the morning) and decided to listen for a few more minutes as several LU stations were still calling cq (plus i didn't have work the next day).
The 47mhz long path indicators were slowly fading down and the LU's were getting weaker and weaker by the minute. I was fairly tired but kept listening as the band was sounding very distorted and different to the normal night time longhaul TEP.
Just as the LU's finally faded down below the threshold of recognition, up out of the noise came two stations calling each other. Due to the distortion on the band, all i could clearly decypher was TU6* calling 9G3* over and over.
Despite numerous calls i could not get through and after what seemed like 5 minutes, the two stations faded down into the noise again. Who would believe central west Africa coming in at that time of night !

I wish i had used a voice recorder during cycle 22/23 as it truly is my most memorable contact/event working South America and then hearing Central west Africa straight after it.

I don't have much of a history on 6 metres, so my most memorable contact is probably something you guys have done 1 million before and twice that amount on Sundays. :P

30-10-1988 W6BJI Jib in California 0325UT 5x7 50.112 USB 80 watts TS-660 vertical dipole fed with rg58.

So Gary, what's your log look like for that date? Path must have been a doozy.

Gary, you took the words right out of my mouth!
LU8MB via Long path, but last cycle, 23.
It was 3 APR 2001 1432 UTC.
Funny things was, I was going to hit the sack half an hour beforehand, but I had a funny feeling something might happen, so I stayed up.

In fact, the most memorable contacts are the Long Path ones;
ZD8KW 9 OCT 2000 21:55 UTC
ZD7MY 28 MAR 2002 23:43 UTC

All worked from home QTH, without having to travel to better DX spots. ;-)

Working SV7BOT 31 OCT 2001 06:44 UTC from the FT-100 in the car with a 1/4 wave whip whilst setting up the 6M7JHV on Mt Low was also pretty cool. Working into EU for a new DXCC from the mobile on a whip. 8)

Roll on Cycle 24 :-)

My most memorable was when Neville vk2qf worked a chinese station, I was hearing him ok, but with qsb and some video noise so it was up and down. The band was fading and i thought about having a go for him straight after 2qf had signed off, but only found out later he was only running something like 10 watts into a vertical so it should have been easy for him to hear me.
It was only later when i spoke to Neville that I found that out. Kicked myself ever since.....
That was many years ago and I havent made that mistake again.
working vk0 impressed me too.

I worked VK7XQ on Es at only 685 Km so the Es was quite strong contacts were being made on 2m.

Also when I worked VK6JR most probably on 6m tropo @ 2933 Km before working him on 2m tropo.

Well Kevin............if Adam doesn't mind me posting a few lines of callsigns then i will see what i can organise and post tomorrow. I need to check the log as i can't remember working longpath during cycle 23...but then again i may have and just don't remember the exact details.
I think i had 8 contacts with LU8MB and also worked a few others down that way.

Stay tuned........ :D

Kevin. A small snippet of what was worked around that memorable period. It was cycle 23 not cycle 22. My apologies to all.

9Q5 to VK3 Long path.

Post by VK3SIX »

Arguably the period 12/1988 to 12/1989 was when we turned the 6M perceptions on their head and rewrote the record books.
The March April Equinox of 1989 when that huge sunspot and solar event opened the band up to countries only ever dreamed about or worked on the HF band.
KP2's qrming KP4's Mexicans all over the band when 10 years before one was worked and one 20 years before that.

However seeing you are asking what was the memoriable one?

The long path QSO with 9Q5EE in Kinshasa over the top of W5 land during a huge opening would be the best I ever made.

It went something like this:

After working WQ5S on CW in 1991, and a whole bunch of W5's I heard someone on CW respond to my CQ on 110 CW.

1st I thought it was WQ5S as I got a 5 and few dits (S) , then I thought it was PJ9EE as I got a 9 and an E and another E.
But as I turned the 11 el yagi to the S/E over VK7 the noise floor came up so I knew the epicentre/hot spot was over the Caribbean my best direction.

So I sent out a ? ? and got nothing intelligible and then a small voice on SSB came up (VK5NC) and said "I think it might have been a 9Q Steve."

What a gentleman unlike many others on this band, so I sent Q?? and back came half of texas, so worked them out and sent 9N? (9 only)
back as clear as came 9Q5EE 519 to 539 for the new VK DX record which should have gone to VK5NC, but in his own words (your cw skills in QRM are better than mine).
So I sent a full sequence on CW and got my report and in the process handed the callsign to every cw literate OP on the VK east coast.
Sadly VK5NC got a wall of qrm when the 9Q5 signed out and the boys on the east coast squabbled over who was next.
The result of this amazing QSO being listed in the WIA DX callbook brought a letter from VK6JQ telling me about a QSO that occured in the same time slot and window over USA between VK6JQ Broome and TL8MB and whether he should claim it.
I encourage him to send it in to FTAC and the dx record rightfully went out to VK6 and the skeptics stopped challenging the validity of long path and started working it.
When I sent in my QSL card I sent in the one from KB5LIU worked around the same time which had the comment that said "great work on the 9Q5, turned the beam here but no hope."
USA still refuses to ratify contacts over half way saying they are too hard to prove.

Re: the Longpaths from VK8 to LU heard the Japs working some people in Spanish and as anyone who works HF DX knows you hear Jap speaking Spanish then he is working a Spanish speaking country. Thats how I got the VK3 Long path record to LU7 in 1991 and set the VK8 DX record to LU in 2001.

Working VK0 impressed everyone except a few VK4's.

For the record: The first VK0 qso's shared by VK3OT VK3LK (now VK4BLK) and VK5NC went something like this.

I copied the VK0AQ beacon on 50.2 from 1000Z up to 579 with rapid scintillation and qsb and auroral buzz.
I also heard Gill VK3AUI on 110 from the south west with auroral buzz.

At 1130z I got Mark VK5AVQ/VK0 on the phone in his donga and he went to the radio shack at Casey Base.

The beacon went off and we worked 5x5 on 50.200 2 way ssb both running 100 watts.

I then called VK3LK Ray on the phone and Trev VK5NC and made a remark "get up on 50.2 and work some rare dx".

For three years VK3LK VK3OT and VK5NC were the only stations from any continent to have all 7 worked on 6M.
Then VK0IX worked the VK1,2,3,5,7 stations in 1995 and Nev VK2QF became a recipient of all 7, followed by PY5CC in 1998 and CT1EEB the 1st European QSO in 2002 to Smirny Base. Technically the last two are to islands off the coast and not the mainland which is like working VK0 Macquarie Island, however the islands worked from PY5 and CT1 are listed against the Antarctic Continent like Heard Island, but VK0 Macquarie for some technical reason is listed against Tasmania and only counts as a seperate country and not part of Antarctica.

The technical merit and operator achievment of working VK0 goes without saying and it is sad in this world of switched on operators and multi-band radios that despite 35 listed bases on the continent of Antarctica hardly any QSo's ever take place.
Degree of difficulty or lack of motivation? You choose.
