Brisbane SEQ MAD Sunday 24 May 2020

Post by VK4UH »

In just over one week, from the date this was written, the 23 on 23 activity day will fall over a weekend period. As usual this will trigger a Microwave Activity Day (MAD) for the group.

The stepped withdrawal of the current Covid19 travel restriction, due to be implemented in the next 24 hours, will allow us freedom travel of up to 150Km from home. Many of our usual high operating locations will be within that range

Currently the preference is for the MAD to be on Sunday 24th May

Several of the “usual suspects” have indicated the intention to go out portable. I am considering returning to the Gus Butel lookout with 2.4 3.4 5.7 10 and possibly 24GHz. All dependant on who is going where and with which bands.

Who is interested in going out or working from home? Please post here and/or on the VKLogger forum page (Which is still active for this function) indicating what you are planning and which bands you could have available

Regards all

My original plans were to go portable at Howells Knob on the Saturday (23rd) as that weekend (22nd to 26th May) the Sunshine Coast ARC has the use of the special event call sign VI250COOK and I already had a roster going as to who was using the call sign and when. But now that you guys have decided to move the MAD to Sunday that now mean I have to re arrange things as I had plans to run HF portable on the Saturday as well from up on the mountains. No problems I'll just shift the HF to Saturday and run the Call Sign from Howells Knob on the Sunday for the MAD.
Will be running 1296 to 10Ghz.
All I really need now is a confirmed starting time so I can put that on the roster. I was hoping to try the call sign on Sat morning M/S as well.

I'll start planning, and calculating distances.

I know a few of the GCARS members were keen to observe, so favorable spot to have them watch [acknowledging social distancing measures] at least Kamarun Lookout or Beechmont would work for that.

Will update ASAP!

I'll [cl]aim for Kamarun Lookout! :om:

@130km from home I'm within the 150km travel limits. Have also been in touch with a couple of the GCARS and will hopefully be able to demonstrate uWave to them!

At this stage 1.2, 2.4, 3.4 & 10GHz

It's also Lamington National Park VKFF-0280 under the WWFF/VKFF regime so I'll be capturing QSOs under that as well [will be running HF too!!!!]

I’ll give the black hole Blackbutt another go. There is a clearing above the road right on the escarpment looking South that _should_ be good for Kamuran and Gus Beutel. Past experience wasn’t good. I am tending towards dodgy gear last time rather than a bad spot.

QG63cd is the locator.

I've installed another 23CM antenna at home so will be keen to test it.

Greetings to all!

My present plan is for Jason VK4YOL and me to activate the BVHFG's VK4IF call sign, operating from the promontory overlooking Moreton Bay at Shorncliffe, Brisbane, where the grid locator is QG62NQ.

This location will be a bit of a "try it out and see" experiment....Geoff VK4KJJ, when he was living here used it several times....despite the fact that it's only about 15 metres above the water level, it has a superb outlook to the South that should be good to try on the lower microwave bands.

All bands from 1296 MHz to 24 GHz will be available with 'talk back' on 146.500 or 146.550 or 439.000 or 1296.175 MHz, or by 'phone/text to 0428191066. I am anticipating that we will be fully operational by 12:00 midday.

Looking forward to as many contacts as possible happening across SEQ, and that all of us have fun on the day!

Please UPDATE your VKSpotter /P profile before Sunday....

The last couple of 23-on-23 and MAD a few stations details were incorrect resulting in wrong details being reported

Tnx to all participants especially those who went portable a very good effort which made the day. Luckily wx wise Sunday was a huge contrast to Saturday the scheduled day for May`s MAD.

Worked on 23 cm were VK2VL, VK2FZR, VK4CZ/p, VK4NA, VK4JAM, VK4ALH, VI250COOK, VK4IF/p, VK4VU, VK4KAY, VK4MES, VK4MJF, VK4UH/p, VK4YOL/p & on 9 cm VK4CZ/p, VK4IF/p & VK4UH/p.

Will look forward to when we can do this again & tnx for everyone's time,

Great activation event. Some great QSOs. End stopping signals from a number of stations. The extra effort in fixing the RX performance of my 3.4GHz tvtr. It paid off.

Also had the great opportunity to demonstrate uWaving to Jamie VK4XD from the Gold Coast ARC who made a few great QSOs.

Hope a spark was lit.

We had a great time up at Howells Knob working the Special Event Call Sign VI250COOK. Even Glenn VK4FSCC got in on the act working a bit of HF with his home brew Ozziepole antenna.
We did miss a couple of stations possibly due to terrain but we did our best to get everyone on the log.
Big thanks to Wayne VK4WS and Glenn VK4FSCC for helping me on the day. My hearing is degrading badly now and as much as I hate admitting it my days of Ham Radio and these MAD's might be ending soon. It is just getting harder and harder for me to hear the radio now.
All contacts have been logged and eQSL cards for the special event call sign will be available soon.
