Zoom - Security Warning

Post by VK4GHZ »

I work at a University, and whilst I'm still going into our Media facility occasionally, we primarily use Zoom to conduct video conferencing when in WFH (Working From Home) mode.

Our staff were warned about security risks associated with Zoom several weeks ago, so it's probably timely to share some of that below for those who may be oblivious to such things.

Zoombombing - How to protect yourself

Zoombombing is when people who were not invited to your Zoom meeting, join your meeting and broadcast content which can be of anything, including sexually explicit content. These trolls simply enter random Zoom meeting ID’s until they hit a live meeting that will allow them to share content.

Below are a number of ways your can protect your meetings:

Update your Zoom - NOW!
There has been a number of updates and enhancements to Zoom over the past week. We are asking all Zoom users to update all devices to the latest version of Zoom. This is for security, privacy, and functionality.

Check you are running the latest version of Zoom
If you already have the Zoom desktop client installed:

1. Sign in to Zoom desktop client
2. Click your profile picture
3. Click Check for Updates

Don’t publish your meeting URL to a public forum or website
Just send the meeting ID to those who need to be invited if possible.
If you do need to publish it publicly, make sure to add some of the other protections below.

Add a Password to your Meeting
When you create/schedule a new meeting, make sure to turn on the Require a Password option. This can also be added to existing meetings. (Zoom > Schedule > Require Meeting Password)

And found this interesting piece on one of my regular YouTube channels, published April 22.

Zoom does appear to be proactive with updates.
