IC-9700 firmware update

Post by VK4GHZ »

For those expecting to take delivery of an IC-9700 soon, take note of the firmware version the rig has.

Version 1.05 was released on March 29, 2019 and first batches could have been in transit already.
Changes from Version 1.04

• Faster boot-up time.
• Improved TX/RX Call Sign Display function.
• Realigned the display layout when using the DR function.
• Fixed an issue where "MY CALL SIGN" may not be properly transmitted.

I am informed it will run generic mast head amps and you can set each band to correct drive power for amp.
Be interested to see how good it is on 1296.
VK3AXH reports working a JA on EME 432 and the JA says he compared 910 and 9700 and found 9700 significantly better for EME.
We shall see.
OPC 2350LU required to talk to it by PC or ANdroid.

Hi all,

There is a new version of the Basic Manual. You can download from the Icom Australia site. They have changed the references on page 1-3 from Section 2 to Section 13. I think that someone in the US suggested the link to section 13 and were probably not aware of what was on pages 2-2 & 2-3.....

Icom Australia has been working on the issue, but it looks as if the easiest fix route was taken. As a result, a couple of basic interface diagrams have been lost that are in the Japanese language manual.

Regards,

Peter VK3PF

A PC can talk to the radio via the USB port provided that the appropriate USB driver is installed. Just needs a USB A to USB B cable & should give CI-V control plus a bidirectional audio port, once you have the settings correct. People are reportedly using IC-7300 or IC-9100 as the Radio in the WSJT-X Settings.

I didn't actually install the drivers separately, and it was painless to get CS-9700 up and running.
(Windows 7 Professional 64-bit desktop here)
Nor did I bother reading the CS-9700 document.

Connect the rig to the PC via the appropriate USB lead - Do NOT run CS-9700 yet - and the correct drivers should install by themselves.

Then, run CS-9700.
On first use it auto-detected the correct COM port, but take note of which port was assigned to this lead in case this was a coincidence.

The CS-9700 program makes it effortless to set up all the memories, ie; the vast number of never-used repeaters. :J
Don't forget, you can cut & paste rows.
ie; set up one memory with repeater -DUP, tone, etc, and Control C to copy, then cursor down to the next row, and Control V to paste.

Early days of fiddling, but the SDR capabilities are really shining through.

To make signals on the waterfall a bit more pronounced, I spent a bit of time fiddling with the Scope settings.
(Click on any Forum image attachments to view full-size.)
Scope-Settings.PNG
Main changes;
VBW = wide
Waterfall size = Large
Peak Color Level = Grid 2

VFO tuned to 144.200 and VK4RBB 144.440 MHz beacon (antenna deliberately pointed away - not strong) clearly seen:
20190411_132640.png
I like having the three defined Scope ranges per band.
This allows you to tune off elsewhere, but keep the Scope where you want it, rather than follow you around +/- .
Obviously, which antenna you're using and where it's pointed will affect what can be seen on the Scope.
Here, for weak signal monitoring, I have the Scope set to 144.000 - 144.600 MHz.

Have tuned up to listen to the local unused repeater, but note the scope is still monitoring 144.000 - 144.600 MHz:
20190411_135701.png
It's cool how you can assign the Power button (short press) to grab screenshots as PNGs.

Scope edges easily set up in CS-9700:
Scope-Edges.PNG
There is no comparison to an old IC-910.

The only issue that is currently ruffling feathers is the one of stability, and how the '10 MHz Reference' is implemented in locking the 49.152 MHz master osc.
Let the dust settle and see what develops.
However I'm running my IC-9700 throughout the day to age the Ref Osc crystal.

Aside from saving your rig's setup, a grotty old 8GB SD card provides heaps of audio recording time.
20190411_14174_1600.jpg
The IC-9700 seems to run cooler than the old IC-910, with an uncalibrated hand feeling how warm the top panel is.

49.152 MHz GPS Locked

Post by VK4GHZ »

I was looking into a GPS locked 49.152 MHz solution, and started perusing various Fractional-N PLL datasheets, such as the HMC830, HMC832.

But why reinvent the wheel?
Although that seems to be a ham thing! :J

These devices from Jackson Labs might be suitable.
GPS antenna in > 49.152 MHz out.

Image

Model specific datasheet:
LTE-Lite_specsheet_24.576MHz.pdf
(170.73 KiB) Downloaded 339 times
The 24.576 MHz model can also generate 49.152 MHz.

Family datasheet:
LTE-Lite.pdf
(2.41 MiB) Downloaded 377 times
LTE-Lite modules also provide NMEA output (RMC, GGA, GLL, VTG, GSA and GSV sentences), but unfortunately the baud rate is fixed at 38.4k.
The IC-9700 only accepts 4800 or 9600 baud, which is a pity because neither meets the other.
Might have killed two birds with one stone!

Adam,

Not sure if you have seen these devices from VHFDesign https://vhfdesign.com/pll-lo/lo-pll-usb.html

I am using a number of them in various transverters etc, and they work a treat with GPS locking and are relatively inexpensive.

Fully programmable via a USB connection to any frequency from 35 to 4400 MHz.

They also have a beacon mode which works very well, although I have only tested it on the bench and not implemented it to a suitable amplifier and antenna.

The Ukrainian developers have now introduced a doubler which allows frequencies up to 12 GHz to be produced.

This may be a good way to achieve a GPS locked IC9700.

Cheers

Peter, the VHFDesign kit specs (for both the ADF4351 and MAX2871) indicate a lower limit of 50 MHz.
(Need 49.152 MHz)

Which variant do you have?
Have you tried it beneath 50 MHz?

And does the ProgSyn software actually allow you to program a frequency below 50 MHz, or is this where the 50 MHz lower limit is imposed?

I'm aware the actual ADF4351 has a lower limit of 35 MHz, and the MAX2871 has a lower limit of 23.5 MHz.

Adam,

I haven't actually tried it below 50Mhz but the original manual for ADF 4351 specified down to 35 MHz.

My last communication with Anton back in December said that they were not assembling ADF4351 units in the future, but I see that they have now reintroduced them to their sales list, as well as the MAX2871.

Anyway, the board is really impressive in its capabilities and dead easy to program using any Windows based computer with a USBA to USBB cable.

******************************

I looked at the Jackson Labs data sheets. No doubt Icom chose an"'off the shelf" 49.152MHz standard timing TXCO.

Surely there are other manufacturers who have a 10Mhz locked device producing a 49.152MHz output?

Cheers

I contacted Anton and asked about the 50 MHz limit.

His reply:
Hello,

Software allows to set the frequencies in range of 23.5 - 50 MHz (MAX2871) but result on output may not satisfy you.
A few examples in attachment.
Everything works well below 50 MHz (from software perspective), but the output amplifier that stands after the synthesizer with frequency set to below 50 MHz, may have bad amplitude frequency response graph.

73!
Anton Malsh
VHFDesign team
He set the PLL board to 23.5 MHz, so the boards do work down to the PLL's lower limit, not just 50 MHz.

...may have bad amplitude frequency response graph
Is a bit too cryptic for me.

Adam,

Anton has said that before to me as well.

MY interpretation of that statement is that the specified output level of +10dBm is only guaranteed from 50 MHz upwards. In fact, in their manual they actually say that the output level is not less than 5dBm at the upper frequency level. Presumably the same applies at the lower end.

Given that reports suggest -10dBm is required by the IC9700, that should not be a problem.

It is certainly one of many options that could be considered for GPS control.

Rob Sherwood's (of Sherwood Engineering) summary post on the IC9700.io group is worthy of consideration - maybe then Icom will consider a future upgrade.

Cheers

Peter
