Everyone listening no one transmitting

I have done this couple times now
once around 0800 yesterday and again 0745 today.
running wspr on a quiet as quiet 40M band.
Put out one transmission and staggered by the receivers out there.
tune the band and apart from couple locals and bit of cw and huge pile on FT8 SILENCE
so where is the hobby going?

Society has dumbed down.
We now have three generations of smart phone zombies.

Lazy asses who will waste several hours per day scrolling through endless dribble on social media, rather than actually achieving anything meaningful.

Facebook has been a major contributor to that.

How often do you see people 'Looking for recommendations' on Facebook (because it's quick and easy - the INSTANT gratification - and they want everything with minimal effort).
Once upon a time, people used to do their own research, and become educated.
Now, they just take the word of one or two randoms 'recommendations' (and by those who have a financial interest).

And then you get lazy assess who will ask a question on a particular interest/community group that get asked every damn day.
They are too lazy to even use the limited search capabilities.
And that assumes the original poster was actually smart enough to tap out a few key words (something to search on), that weren't mis-spelt in the first place.
A tall order!

And bear in mind Faceplant is nothing more than an advertising platform.

Get people addicted to liking random crap, (as if anyone else really gives a sh1t about what YOU like), and then monetise this stupid newfound habit.



Faceplant etc can be useful as a promotional tool, but once you become aware that YOU might have addiction problems, then it's time to do something about it, and convert wasted time to achieving meaningful things.

Just let the computers talk to each other, because the Ops are far too busy watching cat & dog videos, and other assorted dribble?

That is an amazing list of stations for one transmission, but I tend to think that our hobby is progressing.

Take a look at the signal strengths those stations are reporting.

Most of them can only hear you because it is a digital mode.
You would struggle to have even a CW contact with most of them at those signal levels.

Isn't that why the FT8 frequency is packed and the rest of the band is relatively quiet?

I think it's a good sign that there is so much activity at this stage of the solar cycle.
If there were no digital signals, there would be very little activity at all, which is definitely not good for our hobby.

I can only tolerate Facebook in very small doses these days, and my use of it is highly targetted.

Archiving this Forum for two years was actually an experiment of mine to see if Facebook groups could possibly replace traditional Forums like this.
Nope.
Which is why this Forum was 'rebooted' back into action.
Sadly, we still see many people preferring FB when a Forum would be more appropriate as technical content repository.

Absolutely none.

Whilst this may reflect the usage of a majority of said users, I do not use it this way.
For instance I use WSPR to try to probe propagation paths in real time. I then get a notification on my phone which tells me if I have been heard, or I have heard anyone within the filters I've placed (usually on 2 metres this is more than 500km and at a higher SNR to allow voice).

A good example of this was on 5th of January this year. I was not in the shack at the time, in fact I was vacuuming the house when I received a notification with a "spot" to VK4. I had been closely monitoring 6 metres which had been open at the time too. I then quickly posted here on the Logger and called CQ on 144.1. I ended up working probably a dozen stations.

Each to his own I guess. On another note though related to the thread... recent silence has been getting deafening on the local repeaters which, at one stage not too long ago you had a job to butt in on conversations. I now call CQ on repeaters.

however, it's not just Digital Modes - - those other Modes of operation, are terribly active, either.
- - it's tricky to hear anyone - when everyone is in the RX Mode.
