Interested in how these things go. I figure that so long is the RX is at least on par with the handheld I currently run in the car (with external dualband antenna), then it looks like reasonable value. Don't really want to leave anything too expensive permanently in the car in case some junkie pinches it.

Hi Ron

I presume you have a programming lead. To make it work you most likely will need to use different USB driver to that of the later Windows version.

Download the appropriate programming software for the radio. This defaults to Chinese but English can be selected from one of the options along the top line (can't remember which one).

Programming on the 8900R is via the front 3.5mm socket, not the rear one as in the 8900. The rear one on the 9800R is for an external speaker. No external speaker option is available on the 8900.

The 8900R I have had the power pot wound all the way up resulting in low power being not much different for high power. If you back this of a little bit, low power will then be about half high power without a significant drop in high power.

Hope this helps some.

OK, I've bitten the bullet and ordered one of these and a programming cable. Both were considerably cheaper from Aliexpress than eBay.

Note that the KT-8900R is different to the older (and still more common) KT-8900. The "R" has a single row of buttons below the display and a cooling fan on the rear, whereas the 8900 has buttons above and below the display.

$104.18 including shipping for the radio here: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Upgraded ... 39861.html
Make sure you click on the "Get Coupon" button for US$2.00 discount.

And $11.74 for the cable here: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/HOT-QYT- ... .55.778M1n

Haven't found anybody really negative about these rigs yet, so should be fine for the car.
