Legally Indentifying

Post by VK3ZAZ »

After a bit of QRM from people who don't understand the Data band plans and possibly wondering why they hear 1 and 2 minutes of unidentified carriers, I looked around for regulations and found hairy fairy references that unidentified transmissions are not allowed, no matter how brief.
This means that no call sign was associated with a transmission.
So even if all you’re doing is testing your antenna, tuning up the amp, speaking your call sign will work.
And to see if you’re in reach of a distant repeater, keying the mic and listen for the repeater’s signal, that’s called kerchunking because of the sound that everyone else hears.
You are supposed to say your call sign! Right?
Main rules are to give your call sign at least once every 10 minutes during a contact and when the contact is finished.
You’ll generally need to give your call to establish contact of course.
If the contact is too short for the 10 minute rule just give your call sign as you end the contact.
This applies to test transmissions as well.
The purpose of identification is to state the source of the signal.
If you are using phone, you are required to identify in English I think[/b] but I hear an Italian net in VK2 all the time so I guess not.
Anyway its not about phone its about data... it looks like the WSPR digital signal is OK and if you decode it you will know who and where
AND the regs say....
The call can be given in CW, voice, image, or even digital transmission.
so don't drop carriers on legit data please. :om:
You dont know what is going on they were legit tests at gray line
as a courtesy I am setting my CW ID ON.

Hi Steve,

Good point about the CW ID.

The 80m WSPR frequency here in VK2 is interesting. The WIA has it's weekly broadcast on 3.595MHz LSB. I have managed to remember turn off the U3S just in time, a few times. Prefer not to rock the boat on this one.

Silly question, but why wasn't a morse ID programmed in automatically in WSPR when it was first devised???

Allan,
I might be wrong but I think the WSPR2 software has CW id as an option.

Hi Nev,

Yes, it does when you turn it on....

On the U3S I have, you need to program additional transmit frames, and with limited to 15 frames it is a real pain. :?

Hence my comment, why wasn't it built into the standard on day 1, as it is generally a licensing requirement?? :D

From the Radiocommunications Licence Conditions (Amateur Licence) Determination 2015, Sections 8(1) and 8(2)
... by voice (using the English language), by visual image or by an internationally recognised code.
So (a) the Italian net should be identifying in english and (b) WSPR is an internationally recognised code so adding a CW ident is unnecessary.

Its all a bit wishy washy. What exactly is a visual image....and who (internationally or otherwise) might recognise any particular code I may choose to use.

Surely Italian is an international code, very popular in parts of Europe. :J

Have heard the Italian gentlemen on 40M from time to time. Their social net has been going on for a while and don't think they are particulary concerned.

If acma can decode the data then they have your call and no offence. If they can't decode u they don't get your call anyway.. All a bit weird actually.

Part of the problem of identifying with digital modes is which digital mode is being used. There are about 15 or so different ones which would make it difficult at times to work out which is the mode being used.

So far have only had a foray with PSK31.

Well exactly, its just another area in which the regs are still in the 1950's. With the plethora of new digital modes there is no way the ACMA is gunna have all the decoder s/ware ready to rock and roll.

If we decide to use our new home brew ZAZ-ZLR mode nobody is going to know who does or does not ident.

Is the ACMA really interested?
