VK6JQ broome QRT

Post by VK6SIX »

Bill, VK6JQ from Broome is the only ham in VK6 to obtain DXCC on 6 metres.

Bill also holds the Australian 6 metre DX long path record of 28397 km with TL8MB [ central african republic] from april 1991.

He has sent his DXCC certificate to Perth and i think it will be displayed by the WA VHF group at wireless hill.

At that time he used a really old kenwood 6 metre rig with i think 10 watts output into a very nice yagi. [may have been a TS600?]

He used CW 99.8% of the time and once told me he could not find his kenwood microphone.

Living in broome over the past few cycles put him in an ideal QTH for daily 6 metre openings to europe.

His license is still current and i do not know much more about his health etc.

I visited Bill in October 2002, whilst in Broome on a 6m DXing trip.

Thanks for sharing the photos of Bill, I have been considering a stay in N.W VK6 to try and complete DXCC on 50MHz but I think I have left my run too late now that the predictions for future cycles are so dire...

Oh, Peter. Soooo pessimistic !

The solar cycle only affects occurrence rates of serendipitous F2 propagation.

In the lower latitudes you get access to the Equatorial Ionospheric Anomaly (EIA), which we know from many years of ionospheric and propagation research - and even recent experience - supports 50 MHz signals more often than pessimism allows, even through solar minima. I refer you to my recent series in DUBUS, completed in the latest issue. :)

Then there's sporadic E - which is unaffected by the solar cycle (perhaps it affects extreme Es occurrence); except, of course, by amateurs' "solar cycle belief thinking", as you demonstrated.

Long-haul Es rules! 8)

Pity I missed eye-balling with VK6JQ Bill Webber while I was up in Broome at Willie Creek Jul-2013 thru Jul-2014 and also at a B&B Nov-2015 thru Feb-2016.
I would've loved to personally greet him and congratulate him on his 6M DXCC achievements.
I guess I should've written to his PO Box number.
I hope Bill is well.

.

When I got the 9Q5 Long path and had all the purists whinging all summer about it,
Bill saw the entry in the dx records in the following years callbook.
He wrote me and asked about the TL8 and I suggested he submit his logs and card to FTAC and ignore the pundits in Perth who said he didn't know which way he was beaming.
He was worried he would make a fool of himself and I said nah I already did that stick it in.. so he got the card and submitted it..
I can remember much like you are carrying on now how right they were or is that righteous?
Anyway nothwithstanding the hecklers and soothsayers Bill sent the log in and that's why chronologically I was listed ahead of him and
good on FTAC for recognising individual efforts of people.
Something you should learn to do Rog, your e layer theory is unprovable..

The historical records will outlive us all. Make a bet we will be in these books long after we are all silent keys..

VK6JQ is no longer listed in the ACMA database.
No matches were found for your query.
Another ham that has silently disappeared.

"1.1km from Bill's QTH to the best beach in the world!"

It had crocs and the first of the stingers when I was there - far from the best beach but it is big and you can drive on it.

I was staying 500m away - I also should have gone and said hello had I known...
