I went to my local Bunny shop today to get some timber to support a VK3YE portable magnetic loop (thanks for the idea Peter ). I ended up buying some 15x15mm Tasmanian oak hardwood. Its very straight, knot free and strong and does not bend easily.
My next thought was how would it go as spreaders for a 20, 15, & 10m Moxan beam? I know one can get fiberglass spreaders quite easily, but I can get this timber four blocks from my house and it is not to expensive.
My question to the wood experts out there is what to paint it with to preserve it?

Tasmanian oak spreaders for Moxan beam?
Re: Tasmanian oak spreaders for Moxan beam?
Don't paint it, oil it with linseed oil.
It will waterproof it and is less likely to succumb to the ravages of the sun.
Also stops the wood drying out and cracking.
Does mean that you will have to take it down and re-oil it periodically.
