SK ZL2ADU

Post by ZL3RC »

Its with great sadness that I pass on the news that Harry Gorton ZL2ADU is a SK.
Harry passed away in Taranaki base hospital yesterday evening just short of his 70th birthday.
His call-sign is well known on EME and 2m tropo across the pond as well as around NZ.

He leaves a big whole in 2m.

RIP Harry.

Very sad news indeed.

Harry was always a decent signal on 2m EME. We 'almost" worked a few times with my single yagi.

This is very sad indeed.

He was undoubtedly the most active ZL'er on 2m SSB and EME and he will surely be missed.

RIP Harry.

That is so sad!
I had got an email from him a short while back, telling me of his latest EME DX.

He had completed his 1000th QSO on EME. What a great achievement.

This is such a shock.
We will miss you Harry! A great loss to the ham community.
RIP Harry.

I first meet Harry in a 2m VHF contest and after that we made several contacts on 2m.
Harry suggested we try some AE as the Auckland to Christchurch flights flew in a straight line between our two QTH's.
It worked out very well and we had been using NZ553 to make contact when ever we could, most nights as it turned out for about 3 years.
It was an interesting experiment looking at the differences between planes sizes and altitude.

I remember the day I spotted a Boing 767, our normal aircraft were Airbus A320's, on the flight path between us and a quick phone call had Harry on the air with amazing results.
He phoned me afterwards and was so excited about the difference, such a great guy.

We visited Harry in 2014 and had a fun night and experienced Harry's cooking, he ate well, very well.

He may have made 1000 EME QSO's but he had never worked a ZL3 off the moon and Im disappointed now that I can't provide him with that achievement.

RIP Harry.

I had only met Harry recently after returning to 2 meters. He was usually one of the first ZL's heard in VK4 and the last.
We had quite a few email back and forth discussing 2 meter propagation and he gave me a good insight into some of the previous openings.
You will be missed Harry and the saddest thing is I hadn't met you a lot earlier.

Yes so sad,My wife and I stayed one night at his place in his camper van.
He cooked us a very nice roast chicken as I remember.
Had my two meter ant down last winter so missed the AE QSOs I used to have with him.
Last time I worked him was the December contest and he asked will I come on for the AE.
I said yes but have been busy on HF so I will always regret not coming on 2m this year.

I had the pleasure of knowing for over 40 years from the days in Wellington, the parties in Orentel bay, field days and other activities.
There are many from that group are now sk.
Harry had an interest in motor sport and has a ford anglia suitably modified, witch we talked about competing again in hill climbs
we renewed our friendship our the last ten years,at market days, vhf forums and regular skeds.
I will miss Harry, his smiling face
REST IN PEACE DEAR FRIEND

Advice was posted on the N0UK EME logger by ZL1RS that Harry ZL2ADU is now SK. Harry was a keen 2m EME'r that was the most regular ZL station in recent years. I had many contacts with him via
EME and also a Tropo qso in 2013. He was still very active on EME right up till the end. RIP Harry
