40m Traffic Net - Slow Speed Thursday 8:30 UTC

Post by VK3GDM »

It's on again!

40m 7051.2kHz - Traffic Net at 0830UTC

1. This is a quick fire CW net at slow speed.
2. The Net Controller (NCS or NC) will call for checkins with "CQ CW NET de <NC_CALLSIGN> QNI"
3. Stations check in simply by sending "CALLSIGN QNI"
  • - Just send once and don't expect acknowledgment.
4. NCS will send a list of stations "QNS <STATION_LIST> de <NC_CALLSIGN>
5. NCS will call for anymore check-ins "CQ CW NET de <NC_CALLSIGN> QNI"
  • - This is your opportunity if he missed you first time.
6. NCS will go round the list;
  1. When you are called respond with;
    de <YOUR_CALLSIGN> QRU QNX? (If you are just checking and want to leave.)
    - NCS will then excuse you with;
    QNX <YOUR_CALL> de <NC_CALL> 73 (or something like that)
  2. OR when called in respond with;
    de <YOUR_CALL> QSO <OTHER_CALL> (If you want a QSO with another station <OTHER_CALL> )
    - NCS will pair you with <OTHER_CALL> and get you to QSY.
7. NCS will finally close the net with Q code "QNF".

Note: There is no chit-chat or long winded overs on the net frequency and the NCS controls who does what. This allows the net to flow quickly.

See "How to check in" here http://www.vkcw.net/nts

And don't forget try the CW BASH later at 0900UTC 40m 7050kHz
-Call in on 7050kHz and QSY for QSO

Good turn-out tonight! I counted at least eight stations checkin. There was two SWLs and I heard another station calling just off frequency.

Stations I HRD checkin on 7051.2kHz VK4QC VK2CPR VK4CC VK2FGBR VK2CCW VK2JDR VK3GDM VK5EEE es HRD VK5FE on 7050kHz

Other stations heard or QSOd after net and during BASH : VK3GRK

Not a bad effort considering this net is in it's first week.

Last night was the first time I had checked in to the net. I was as nervous as hell and the slow speed was too fast for me. :)
Hopefully I will improve as I become used to the protocol (and I start practicing more) I will listen tonight and see what a "normal" speed net is like but I will be back next Tuesday.
Last night I was using my faithful WW2 Luftwaffe Baumuster key. I love that key but I will try and alternate through my other WW2 keys.

Thanks for providing the chance for on air practice, terrifying or otherwise. :)

Great to hear you on the net Col!

I was nervous too, as I'm not quite sure of the protocol. So I just sent the following:
"VK3GDM QNI K" (to check in)
and finished with
"de VK3GDM QRU QNX?" (Nothing to add and can I check out)

Some of the others tried more complicated messaging, which I will work toward.

It was all good fun anyway. and over is less than 15mins.

As far as the speed goes, I think everyone was a bit fast. I had my keyer set to min at 16wpm. I need to get my straight key out so I can slow down some more for Tues and Thursday.

There was plenty of activity either side of 7050kHz in the BASH session straight after also.

Don't forget to check in tonight.

If you find the Net controller too fast, please send <QRS>.
Call in at your preferred speed and the NC should adjust to your speed.
