I've seen several bits and pieces in the news and papers exhorting us to be prepared for emergencies from the new seasons storms etc. But does anyone out there have a take on how good the power supplies / batteries that feed the mobile phone network backbone are ? In other words if the power supply system really goes away for days how long will they stay up ? For that matter the good old copper fed telephone system that runs (or used to) on a massive battery bank how long will that stay up ?
In South Africa some of the more remote cell phone towers were powered by fuel cells and ran off of tanks of hydrogen gas and could run for a month or more.
Recent fires down south raised similar issues when some mobile phone systems went away (not sure why ...fire damage or power loss?)
The same sorts of questions could be asked of the repeaters that service our emergency services folk ...police fire and ambulance etc.
And of course last but not least what about our own radio amateur repeaters. Some of those for sure have a PV array feeding a battery bank as a supply, but which.
Regards and getting ready to take shelter
