Review to weigh up revoking, offloading functions

"The ACMA was established in 2005 and regulates broadcasting, telecommunications and radiocommunications in Australia.

But the landscape has changed significantly in the last eight years thanks to the likes of the NBN, the influx of mobile devices and

the growth of social media, Turnbull said, making communications services more integral to Australians' lives.

The government needs to determine whether ACMA is equipped to handle the "contemporary and future communications regulatory environment..."

Yep, and we wonder why the hobby has an image problem... We need the hobby to be seen to be a serious, constructive participant in this process. Fortunately the WIA is representing us well on this issue. What we don't need are the hobby's (and society's) fringe dwellers making us look like lunatics.

The review of the ACMA is being conducted by the Department of Communications (DoC), who will report to the Minister before the end of 2015.

The review's Terms of Reference will "consider whether any of the objectives and functions of, or services provided by, the ACMA can cease, be provided by other agencies or the industry itself. It will also consider whether there are objectives and functions of, or services provided by, other agencies that may be more efficiently and effectively delivered by the ACMA."

The DoC has foreshadowed publishing an issues paper, due out shortly. The Institute will prepare a submission to the ACMA Review following the release of the issues paper.
