No 6m operation from Willis Is in Nov

Post by VK4WDM »

The VK9WA operation from Willis Is in November (http://vk9wa.com/) does not include 6m. What a pity. Many 6 ops still need it and although Nov is a bit too early for strong Es, there is certainly a chance for VK, ZL and also TEP to JA and Pacific.

I wonder if they could be persuaded to change their mind? I am sure that some of their radios are 6m capable and that one of us in Nth QLD could supply a 6m antenna.

I will send the coordinator an email and sound them out.

Would be great if they were to but I doubt any difference to this area unless exceptional conditions

I have sent a message to them via their website asking that 6m be included and offering help in finding an antenna they could borrow.

I will post results here.

I have a light weight 3 element 6M yagi if required. They usually depart to Willis from Cairns? So easy to arrange collection.

During the 2008 VK9DWX DX-pedition to Willis Island only one 6 metre contact was made. It was between VK9DWX and Gary VK4ABW in Townsville. How do I know this? I was the operator on Willis. Sadly despite calling CQ for many hours Gary was the only contact I made.
From December 2009 to July 2010 David Burton VK9WBM was based at the BOM station at Willis. He made 74 contacts on 6 metres. I was QSL manager for David and have all his logs.

Lets hope that the magic band will be activated again.

G'day Brian,

I only have the logs on a Excel spread sheet. I don't use LOTW. I could send you the 6 metre logs if you wish. Let me know.
