We hams can get upset when we misread a call sign in CW. I certainly did when I stuffed up the final letter of the only CX station I have ever heard on 6m, but it is not going to have the same sort of consequence as the following episode recorded on the Aviation Safety Network website.
A Manx Air Bristol 170 crashed on the 27 February 1958 killing 35 out of the 42 on board when the co-pilot misread a non-directional beacon (NDB) CW signal as "MYK" when it was in fact sending "MYL" while the captain was absent from the cockpit. The error was not realized when the captain returned and the aircraft followed the wrong flight path and hit a hill.
