UK adds 1 MHz to 2m band

Post by VK2ZRH »

The RSGB has announced that the UK regulator, Ofcom, intends to release an additional 1 MHz of spectrum at 146-147 MHz for use by Full licence holders - temporarily.

See the RSGB's Stop Press item here: http://rsgb.org/main/blog/news/gb2rs/he ... r-2m-band/

And when they also get 147 to 148 MHz, they will have what we have had all along in Australia.

How can you say that Andrew?

There are people in Australia doing all the things mentioned in the PPT. Here in Australia we have the freedom to experiment with almost any technology we can get our hands on and with less restrictions than the UK licensees seem to have. Their concern with operating bandwidth is understandable considering the population density but other than that I think we have it made in the shade.

Progress?

The WIA is drafting change recommendations to the LCD. The WIA is fighting on behalf of all amateurs to keep ALL our bands and perhaps get us a few more. The WIA and many other amateurs are looking at ways to engage and encourage more people into the ranks of AR. I understand the reality behind these pushes and it may well be that not every outcome is as desired but there is action on these fronts. There is progress.

Amateurs are experimenting with new modes (in their experience) every day. Amateurs are building their own knowledge by building testing and using equipment at both ends of the spectrum. Amateurs are expanding the horizons of what was know about so called "mature modes" all the time right here in Australia and those guys are right up at the pointy end of their field - globally. Some of them are members of YOUR club.

Sure smells like progress to me.

Sometimes, when things don't play out the way I expected I might get a little upset that no progress is being made. I have to look at the big picture. Sometimes just because it didn't happen my way doesn't mean progress wasn't made.

Of course I forgot to mention that many clubs just like yours also hold excellent events like these to encourage participation.

Will I be there? Unlikely.

I hope that the rest of the ham community don't get tarred with the same brush just because I won't be there.

If I was in the UK I wouldn't get too excited... the proposal makes it very clear that this is a temporary arrangement until such time as a more appropriate user is identified. Submissions seeking a permanent expansion were rejected.
