From what I've seen, I don't believe this is common knowledge amongst hams,

FYI...
This is the technique we use in the television broadcast industry for video, audio, multi-cores, and data cable.
Virtually all cables, except camera triax and camera fibre cables which are rolled up on a drum, or done figure 8.

Heh, heh. I learned that one from a rock band roadie back in the (oh, never mind). 8)

Or if it's a long one and in a hurry make the first loop and tape it with a short bit of tape then rotate hands inside the loop and it winds up fast as you can move your hands

I guess I spent too many years as a roadie.

We used to call it ABC rolling - I gather Auntie used to insist on it.

Frankly, I've seen roadies sacked for not rolling in this manner.

Oh, and keep it in mind when coiling ropes and lines for heaving (for say, throwing over a tree branch) - it stops the heaving knot or weight suddenly springing back in your direction.
