The first Software Defined Radio easy to use with smartphones and fully open to the maker community.

This campaign started on Aug 08 in Dusseldorf, Germany and will close on September 22, 2014 (11:59pm PT).

What is Fixed Funding?
This campaign will only receive funds if at least $125,000USD is raised by its deadline.

XiOne – A RTL2832U based Portable Software Defined Radio: Indigogo Funding Campaign:
http://www.rtl-sdr.com/tag/xione/
August 8, 2014

A new funding campaign for an RTL2832U based software defined radio has gone up on Indiegogo. The new SDR is called the XiOne and is intended to be the first SDR that is easy to use with smartphones and open to the maker community.

With its 100 kHz to 1.7 GHz receiving range, the XiOne has a similar tuning range to the standard RTL-SDR dongles when an upconverter or the direct sampling mod is used. What makes the XiOne different is that it will have a built in MIPS processor, an internal rechargeable battery for portability and it will connect directly through WiFi to a smart device. They are also developing SDR GUI software for mobile devices including decoders for things like ADS-B, AIS and NOAA Satellites.

The IndieGoGo backer price for a XiOne is $179 USD, but if you act fast there are 100 units available at the promotional price of $139 USD. At the moment they have a working prototype with completed firmware, portable Java based SDR GUI, iPhone demodulation software, a MacOS ADS-B receiver, an iPad AIS receiver and an iPad spectrum analyzer. The fundraiser is to help them begin serial production.

There is a Reddit thread discussing the project here:

Technical Specifications:
•Frequency range: 100 kHz - 1.7 GHz
•Up to 3.2 MHz bandwidth.

•Sensitivity better than -110 dBm.
•Frequency stability better 10 ppm (needs to be verified by the next prototype).
•Internal wide band amplifier (MAR-8A+), switchable by software commands.
•8 bit AD-Conversion providing a dynamic range of around 50 dB.
•Internal battery for more than 2 hours of mobile usage. Easily extendable by an external USB power pack.

•SMA Female Antenna Connector.
•Included telescopic antenna to cover the common use cases.

•Effective RF-Shielding of the different system parts (RF-Path, Tuner, Controller and MIPS-Processor).
•Updatable Firmware to keep the XiOne always on the highest level of functionality.
•Open, well documented, network based Application Programming Interface for easy software development to open up the solution to the Maker Community.
•Java SDR, ADS-B, AIS and Spectrum Analyzer applications covering all major operating systems (Windows, Mac OS and Linux).
•By reaching the stretch goals we are going to provide Android, iOS and WP8 apps for the common use cases.

•System based on the following chipset:
- R820T (Tuner)
- RTL2832U (Controller, AD-Conversion)
- RTL8197D (MIPS Processor)
- RTL8192C (WiFi)
- RTL8152B (USB Network Interface)
•USB Interface for internal battery charging which also works as a network interface to stream the SDR IQ-Data.
•WiFi 2.4 GHz b/g/n.
•Connect any mobile device easily.
•Use XiOne as access point to assure SDR as well as Internet usage at the same time.
•Ethernet Network Interface to stream the SDR IQ-Data via TCP or to connect an existing network to use the SDR and for example the Internet in parallel.

G'day Danny,
I decided it would give me a 2nd rx in the shack, so went for the 139dB version

Thanks

I've jumped on the bandwagon and ordered one too. Can always use another rx around the shack.

Impressive! Any catches? Not sure how many of these crowd funded projects comes to fruition and they seemed to be quite a way off from their target.

Yea, interesting point. They have promised that if it doesn't come to fruition we get our money back but even that would be a big disappointment.

Fingers crossed. Be also aware of the potential of an inadequately supported beta product at the other end. As for VCs, be cautious on these "investments".

I supported the Red Pitaya via Kickstarter and that worked out ok - though still wanting a case for it :)

Buying into a kickstart can be quite exciting, just like VC investing. But one must be clear on what one is buying, be it donation, recreation or a sound investment. If the project really is a goer, there'll always be further models for sale.

I bought into the hackRF kick starter. It took a little longer than promised but did get built and you can buy online as well. As others have said, do your homework up front

The 100 units at $139 have all gone. Now 200 units at $159.

Got in, in the nick of time.
Can't sneeze at a $20 & at the end, a $40 saving.
Just need to keep the momentum going, as it's still good value at the final price.
Now, it's the waiting game.
Spread the word around, guys.
