Sugru - non-slumping silicon rubber

Post by VK4GHZ »

Sugru.
Just discovered this on a multirotor forum - have never come across this before!

Worth openly sharing with as many as possible - so not posting this amongst closed groups.

Sugru, as described on Wikipedia;
Sugru, or Formerol, is a patented[1] multi-purpose, non-slumping brand of silicone rubber that resembles modeling clay.
Sugru is malleable when removed from its airtight, moisture-proof packaging, retains its plasticity for thirty minutes,[2] and is self-curing at room temperature after approximately 24 hours.

The material adheres to aluminium, steel, copper, ceramics, glass, fabric, brass, leather, plywood and other materials including ABS plastics.[1]

When cured, it has a 'soft touch' or slightly flexible, grippable texture similar to features commonly found in soft overmolds.
The idea for Sugru was developed by Jane Ní Dhulchaointigh from Kilkenny, Ireland.

Maybe mount some captive threaded nuts in this stuff for a custom mount?

Thanks Adam,
that is WILD.... I have already thought of 20 uses for AR, including making cable boots for feed lines up the tower.

I have a few applications for the stuff myself (it seems most of my spare time is wasted with fixing kids toys these days :) )

Recently I came across a DIY recipe - It's on my todo list to try one day.

Silicone Rubber Self-fusing 8kV Sealant Tape
by Danny VK6DVR:

A roll of this stuff should be in every hams toolbox!

I have used a variant of this product ('Tommy Tape' red in colour) to repair around the aluminium outlet jacket carrying over 100°C h2o to the water pump on a 20+ year-old Toyota fork-lift engine, and for the $30 it cost me it saved me over a thousand dollars in all the five quotes I got for replacing the water-pump and including labour. It worked like a real treat and I suspect their 'Nitro Tape' would be great as well.

Since using this fantastic tape (I found at Bunnings), I have read up and you can even get the clear tape to wind over the junction when fitting two different sized aluminium antenna elements together - a lifetime non-corroding outdoor seal.

One would be curious in finding out what the dielectric constant is, particularly for using this stuff up in the VHF-UHF region for covering and protecting outdoor gear. Also, what the UV stability is like as well.
