Another day another Bay
Looming out of the mist on the 500 foot winch cable.
Antenna bay number 5
4 riggers up in that pea souper
They earn $600 per day

I'm surprised they are bothering to reclaim the aerials. Are they making room on the tower or taking them for scrap?

They would likely make VERY good 2m antennas, and positioned vertically, they would work very well for 2m repeaters.
There's two sites in ZL that use large arrays based on this design for 2m repeaters. Drive it with 100W and it works very well.
What is the outlook for these antennas? Scrap yard or available for Amateurs?

NBN Rollout want the tower space and need to de-stress the tower of some 500KG in weight.VK3ALB wrote:I'm surprised they are bothering to reclaim the aerials. Are they making room on the tower or taking them for scrap?
Feel free to call Boundary metals Hamilton, each antenna on its frame weighs in at 60KG and is 2Mx4M frame

Re: End of an Era CH5A Aerials Bite the dust
I am just looking at the antenna plot
return loss was -40db
137.250 to 143.00 MHZ
1983 design
1.05:1 at 143.750
1.1 at 144.00 and escalating
h plane 20 degrees
e plane 40 degrees
They tuned them by spacing between parallel s/s bars
and a tune stub inside the baluns
They are on a BACK PANE reflector so are directional cardiod pattern prob would not work without the back pane
DIAMETER 10CM
Overall 1.4M
Each dipole 0.64M
phasing is 1/2 s/s rod
stainless steel
backpane is 4.14M x 1.81m
dual balun stacked dipoles
2.2m stacking c/c
0 degrees
-60
to
-147
over 4 levels
7.2kw input radiated 100kw
I bay had 90 degree stub in it
each panel of 4 11.5dbd
147m agl

Hi Steve
While the dismantling was occurring what happened to the other signals from the tower? Were services shut down, reduced in power or what? Thanks for the post: a great story about the end of an era.
Thanks
John
