Yes, sad indeed. Joe had an amazing ability to predict 6m dx openings based on his own telescopic observations of the sun, position of the sun in the sky, weather patterns, and many years of experience. If you had a few hours to spend he would tell you how he did it. :D

What a gentleman of the 52 MHz pile ups to JA as I remember this man, VK4JH

Always courtesy and understanding of the JA stations that needed to work him or just repeat contacts, Hi Joe still on 6.

I will miss the many one on one conversations we had about 6 mts and conditions to the north.

I lived 200 mts from him in south Townsville, and what a privilege to have known him.

He always had time to have a chat and avid constructer of amps, antennas and computers in those days.

His early morning 2mt SSB contacts to the west of Townsville, while most sat 146.700, he was looking for new things like early morning ducting. There was no A/E in those days.

Yes there were others Vk4RO , and VK4RR? went to VK8 and the Cairns operators. But with Joe’s work schedule he was able to get a few hours in when the band opened, and sometimes for many hours.

Antenna was not outstanding by today’s standards. A Collinear antenna array and ladder line feed and a amp, approx. 100 watts in those days. I had 10 watts and was having a ball.

To the JA operators he was a GUNN operator.

Sadly missed, a pioneer of 6 mtr DX in FNQ.

Loved growing snow peas in the tropical winters.

Vale Joe Hanran VK4JH

Thanks for being part of my journey into ham radio
