One for Grant VK3ZTE to show your current drift. Not so pronounced as yesterday.

So embarrassed that I investigated immediately. The issue seems to be in the temperature control feedback loop that I've set up around the main (120 MHz) xtal oscillator in the 2m tx chain (there are actually 3 oscillators in all but the other 2 are at low hf frequencies and less prone to drift). When I set it up a couple of months back, the heater was struggling to get the oscillator box up to the set temperature (52C) but with warmer ambients having arrived, it has been getting there and then the temperature has been hunting and the frequency has followed (it's very sensitive to temp) to the tune of around 10Hz peak to peak with a period of about 200 seconds. I have now simply reduced the gain in the feedback loop around the controlling op amp and I think (fingers crossed) it is better.

Many thanks to Alan and Andrew for alerting me because while I had a vague idea that I had an issue, I hadn't connected it with the lack of decodes - kept thinking the business end of the transmitter was at fault.

cheers to everyone that I've been driving mad

Unsure just yet if Keith VK5AKMs transmissions are playing up or if there is some unusual E layer scattering going on somewhere this morning.

I also noticed some scattering on local 2m wspr signals this morning Leigh.
In the display there is also a strange signal - not sure what it is !?

Cheers.

On signals from stations further afield such as Leigh VK2KRR, it's different, often 2 entirely separate traces. Occasionally, the stronger is the one that drifts in frequency, which I take to mean that it's the aircraft reflected one. I put it down to the fact that on localish signals like yours, there are aircraft flying in and out and setting up random reflection paths whereas on the longer paths, it's a case of midpath aircraft at altitude providing longer lasting steady reflections. Interesting stuff. Quite fascinated by the patterns - I see a fair bit of this sort of thing and put it down to the fact that I'm close to both airports and there are nearly always aircraft around here somewhere.

Hi Grant,

Here is an image of AE Doppler on your signal. A quick look at http://www.flightradar24.com at the time allows you to plot the movements of the various aircraft you're seeing in the waterfall, identifying each by the changes in direction and the relative doppler shifts.

Thanks Alan. Now that you have shown me how, you can expect more of these until everyone has had enough.

Hi,
here are some screen shots of a wspr signal from Brian VK5BC taken Thursday 27-11-14.

The station (at the time) here comprises of a 5 element yagi approximately 4 metres agl into an IC-7000.
I was beaming directly East and Brian was at his station at Corny point on the York peninsula (West of Adel).

Rob,

I pressume these are mostly aircraft with some meteors I can see??

I've been beaming at Melbourne all day or I would have had a look for Brian.

Hi Leigh,

yes, a lot of aircraft reflections from air traffic to my West (Gulf St. Vincent).
I also get reflections from aircraft to the East at times.

The joys of living close to an airport :D
Cheers Leigh.

Hi,
here is a screen shot of an aircraft reflection on VK5KC's signal on 6m wspr.
Also visible (just) is VK5BC/p from Corny Point.

The aircraft in question was a police helicopter doing a search to the north
and north east of my qth. Yagi was beaming to VK4 (north east) at the time.

People sometimes ask, how much signal do you need before WSPR will decode?
I wasn't really expecting this (circled) signal from VK4TVL to decode this evening, but it did, even after it totally faded out and barely came back near the end.

Had a huge big meteor burst this morning on 2m WSPR (see upper left graph), unsure who it was from exactly but it may have been from VK7AM.

Here is a screenshot taken during a geomagnetic storm of a WSPR signal from VK7VF on the 10th of January.
Both signals (VK7DIK and VK7VF close together at 1158) are normal but at 1214 and 1218 VK7VF's signal got
frequency shifted.
