Yes, I have seen the same problem. Your finding that the so-called fake adapters work with the legacy driver in Win 8 is a good finding. Microsoft has imposed an idiot test to frustrate installation of unsigned drivers just to compound the problem.

I dug out my neglected Wouxun KG-UV6D handheld recently, and was trying to get it to talk with the PC via the Wouxun USB adapter, which obviously uses a fake Prolific chip.
Having run the .exe file, it now works with the Wouxun USB adapter.
Try finding anything from 6 years ago on Stupidbook!
And try telling Facebook users that Forums can be better as an information repository - they just don't 'get it'.
