Can anyone tell me a good starter Arduino kit

Uno starter kit sold by Jaycar seems OK

I managed to rig mine up to operate a solenoid valve to drop a drip of coloured liquid into a pool of coloured liquid, and after a pre-determined display, fire the camera flash, for stop-motion splash photography. It worked really well.

Next experiment was moving an old CD-Rom drive stage in discrete steps, and taking a fixed focus photo of a macro object (dead fly, etc.) on the stage, without altering focus, then stack them all together at the end for an almost 3D-like macro image.

To summarise: Arduino (or Freeduino) are good fun

I have had a look at an Arduino starter kit on the net, things like this are not available locally but then not much else either. It included LCD and lots of other components. I would like to learn how to and maybe sometime down the track maybe some ham test gear like antenna analyzer etc

The Freetronics gear sold by Jaycar is pretty good although a bit on the expensive side. You can also order direct from their website and best of all they are Australian owned.

You can save a bit by buying a kit rather than a pre-built module.

I've had good results with the KitTen.

It is hard to beat the prices on e-bay.

I have purchased a ATmega2560 & Uno off ebay (from China). All OK and arrived quickly.

Take a look at seeedstudio.com (there is supposed to be an extra 'e' in there). I bought a seeeduino v3, and grove base shield v1.3. the grove system is modular which makes it super easy to plug in sensors or LED or whatever and try them out in code. much easier than breadboarding, although to be honest you learn a lot more having to wire it up yourself (I can, I'm just lazy these days ).

Shipping takes a while but they're cheap.

Start off with the basic flashing LED thing, make some small changes to the program and upload.

Being able to modify and upload stuff (which isn't always straightforward) constitutes major progress for a beginner.

Then try longer programs to do things (eg send callsign in Morse or call CQ) and learn about inputs and outputs to make it more versatile.

OK, late to arrive at the Arduino party, but finally have a Uno R3.

Ordered from RS for just under $38 (inc GST) and was on the door the following day.

I'm about to delve into tinkering with the Arduino.

Call me stoopid, but how do you go about mounting this in a case for a proper finish?



Obviously the switch actuators are a little short.

No, I don't want to end up with a typical half-finished project that isn't mounted properly or with unlabeled switches!

I know you can get tactile switches with longer 8mm and 22mm actuators, but there must be an alternative to re-fitting switches?

I think the intention was that you build & debug your project that custom build the final product. Good luck trying to find a nice (and cheap) bezel for the display. Perhaps someone has posted the bezel files for a 3D printer?
