KR-400 - Centre to South

Post by VK4CZ »

When I recently removed the 5 element 15m mono band yagi from my small tower, and installed 144, 432, and 1,296MHz yagis, I opted to maintain using my trusty Kenpro KR-400 - purchased nearly 30 years ago second hand, but with regular servicing it survived the test of time through numerous storms including 'The Gap Storm' in 2008 when we had +150km/h winds across this ridge!!

However I've been increasingly frustrated by the widening 'gap' in the rotators movement that occurs between 175 degrees and 190 degrees - either end of the rotators movement. This gap, whilst it was never an issue when the tower was dedicated to 15m, has become an issue now it is supporting VHF and UHF antennas with the majority of stations located to my south.. and many are within the 'gap'.

Whilst I initially just 'parked' the rotator in north position and positioned the antennas south, the constant need to quickly convert the direction was a frustration. I recalled seeing a version of the KR-400 that had a South centred movement, and set about finding information on whether or not I could do the same.

Whilst there was a few options available on the web, the best answer for me was actually very simple. K6XOX had designed and made available a new meter scale, that could be simply printed in colour and stuck to the original meter face. Here's how it works...

Disassemble the old KR-400 controller and remove the meter.

Open the meter to gain access to the scale.

Cut out and stick the new scale on the reverse side of the original meter scale (that way it is easily reversed!!) and put the meter back together.

Reassemble the controller and test!

Copy of the file for the revised meter scale is attached below.

I now have a rotator that has continuous movement through south covering all of ZL, VK2, 3, 7 and 5... plus the northern VK4s without a frustrating 'gap'.
