This is a topic to specifically discuss AIS hardware.
ie; receivers, antennas.
Leigh, VK2KRR, has done a great job in promoting this useful tool, even more so with the demise of high powered TV signals to use as beacons.
The main AIS Marine tracking topic has grown into many pages, and may be difficult for people new to AIS (like mwah) to trawl through it all quickly.
The intention is move any previous posts on hardware into this topic.

Re: AIS Tracking hardware
Good idea Adam. People interested in AIS might also care to join the Marine AIS DXers-Australia facebook group also run by Leigh. I suppose that could loosely be described as AIS hardware or software related.
Search for it on facebook and join or send Leigh a message and I am sure he would add you. It's a closed group so non members will not see any posts. If you are like me and was not interested in Facebook, I opened an account and did not put any info in that I did not want to be shown and I only use it for radio type activities or messaging other hams or family.

Re: AIS Tracking hardware
Ah its not really run by me I just created a presence for it on facebook & approve requests to join lol.
Phil, people may be interested to hear about what receiver your running, and I think Tim VK3JTM has the same one.
As far as im aware, they both use a Kinetic SBS-3. http://www.aircrafttrackingavionics.com.au/SBS-3.htm
Its actually a ADS-B / AIS tracker all in one. I think its an SDR also.

Re: AIS Marine Tracking hardware
Does anyone have any opinions on the Digital Yacht AIS Network Receiver?
Can be obtained off eBay for mid $400.
I'm only interested in a standalone unit, that has Ethernet which can plug straight into my my modem/router.
Can't find many reviews.

Re: AIS Marine Tracking hardware
Adam,
From what I have heard they are quite good. If I didn't have the Comar unit I was going to purchase the Digital Yacht version u mention here.
