Hi Jack

Not easy to break the rules but you may be able to get them modified by a rational argument.

All the wire antennas at MI and Casey base (and I presume at the others) have been taken down and you have to have the station leaders permission to even put up a vertical (see Steve's earlier post in the 50MHZ section).

The Sable Island operation was cancelled with an hours notice and very severe restrictions have been placed on the erection of antennas for any future operations.

The BAD NEWS

Post by VK3ZAZ »

The Good news

HO LOOPS can be heard at 400 KM with 75 watts.

They claim 8dBi.

tested on a 20 foot pole.

THE BAD NEWS

Monitoring side by side

9 el at 75 feet
HO Loop at 25 feet

VK5RBV BEACON

9 EL yagi 529-519-559

HO LOOPS ZIP ZILCH NUTTIN NOT A PEEP.

By my estimate when beacon was 559 or minus 120 dbm on the 9.

Signal on HO LOOP Not even tracing on SDR on FT950.

SO there you have it folks, why you use big aerials to work long distance dx.

If you cant hear it you cant work it.

Not real encouraging news there Steve, interesting data, but decrease can be expected over the "traditional" nine element yagi over the HO-Loop, but didn't expect that much as indicated in your findings.

A decent antenna makes all the difference in a DXped style operation, hooked to a reputable 50MHz transceiver and favourable propagation path, not to mention the "magic mode" (CW) for that extra oomph needed for marginal contacts and increased distance.

Good data Steve, reminds me of similar data that's been found over the years when people rate mutil-band HF/6/2m combination vertical antenna's (Butternut etc)...Jack D. Haden VK2XQ QF-56ne, Sydney NSW.
