Any Thoughts

Post by VK5BC »

After and interest afternoon of when the 6m band appeared to open over most of VK I received an Email from Davide IW9HII. It appears Davide heard me. At the time he says he heard me (0706utc) I was calling beaming towards NW VK6 as I was hearing the Dampier VK6RSX beacon (559) which would have been near enough to Davide's direction. At the same time on 50.110 VK4ZJB was calling me & I was hearing VK6KXW calling CQ in CW (599) as well as weak SBB signal which I could not identify. At 0708utc I turned the beam to VK4 and completed a short contact with VK4ZJB. In checking QRZ it appears Davide is a regular 6m operator who has worked over 100 countries, he is also regularly spotted on DX clusters on 6m.

Although no contact was made, It would be nice to think that Davide did hear me and there appears no reason to doubt it, things seems to add up, time, frequency, unusual band conditions with band appearing to be open over most of VK including NW VK6. Any thoughts?

ps - it was probably the best winter opening in VK5 this season with the band open to VK2, 3, 4, 6 & 7 over a couple hour period.

Hi Brian

I have no problem to put the QSOs in the log, after all we are talking about the magic band where propagation is strange
tell me what to do in the log or not in log?

Hi Davide

I cannot tell you whether you can log, only you know what you heard. All can say is that I was definately calling at the time you reported and was beaming in your general direction. Being 6m anything is possible but there will be the usual sceptics, only wish I had heard you. I was running 200w and using a home brew 6el YU7EF design yagi approx 16.5m high.

H Davide

Did you hear my signal, if so what was the report. At the time I was looking towards NW VK6 and calling, roughly your direction. I did hear some stations, a VK4 calling me, and a VK6 calling on cw, there were other unidentified weak SSB stations in there as well.

Brian,
considering that VK worked the mirror path to this in our summer towards the USA (northern winter) there is every possibility we would do the same towards Europe in our winter while their summer season was in full flight. Its great you documented all of the conditions around you and the appearance of vk6rsx into the mix only enhances the credability of the report. The challenge for VK is for there to be stations on when it happens for us in what is ususally a quiet time, looks like the sun has some kick left in it yet!

Of course this now throws a different light onto the ZL that was reported in Russia a few months ago :-)

Brian,

My thoughts are that after reading your data given, it would be quite possible. Cant see any reason why it wouldn't be correct.

I heard a Ukraine station at 2am last cycle...yes at 2AM after the long path dropped out from South America. But, i have also had a few 'bogus' stations claim to have heard me on days that i was not active.

Brian, the 49ers were in yesterday but they we very weak in the afternoon and only reached S7 during last night. no 48mhz.
Anything is possible on 50mhz....

SWL reports are tough.

Post by VK3ZAZ »

Welcome to the club..
Read my article close shave or near miss
No one believed in the 1988 OH2 SWL report
except VK6KXW/VK6ZDY, who became the first VK to work EU.
For an swl report to be of any use,
conditions should be reproducable,
they are not ..yet!
Conditions to the east however are very reproduceable

Still nothing from North West as of OCTOBER 2012 any time now is the window.

Except for the EA8 to ZL1 and VK4DDC nothing over 16000 KM from VK this cycle...

50MHz is much akin to Lotto I think Steve, you have to be in it to win it, and sometimes you come so close... :P

Don't forget the old DXers adage: "If you cannot hear them, you cannot work them."

Very little XE was noted here in the 2011/2012 summer season, I remember the last cycle when XE1KK beacon would be chugging away just after daylight on 50.023MHz and Kerry ZL2TPY would have it for hours on end from his daylight onwards.

This current cycle doesn't have the clout of the last, it's been a fizzer when you compare. The elusive path to EU this year?

Someone mentioned "lack of propagation to the Pacific Islands this season", well, I can assure most that the path is there but it's just a lack of resident 50MHz operators. Also the Pacific beacon network has fallen by the wayside too. When I was resident op in T30, V63, C21 etc there was always something about 50MHz at one time or another, one of the benefits of being on the equator or near to it.

As most diehard 50MHz ops know and will tell you, if you don't put in the hard yards here you will not reap the benefits...Jack Haden VK2XQ/VU (MM-71) Amritsar, India

Proof of the pudding is submitting the report to the peer group in this case six Italy.
There is ZERO in this direction from that Path...
We arent even close
Best dx so far as listed in EUROPEAN reports...

Apart from PROPAGATION Missing we also lack VK8s in PG66 and VK6s in Pilbara regions
apart from VK6RSX beacon e have ZIP NO TV and very few beacons worth their salt.

As for this 100 watt beacon solution :D :D :D :D :D

VK3RMV 100 watts erp not being heard much at all, waste of time and space,..not to mention power useage..5 kw per day $800 per year $88,000 per cycle.

You missed 1. VK8 - TI2 this year. >16,000K.
The EU path is getting close. Indicators moving further west as each week goes by. Mostly Middle East now...very little of 49ers about.
Stay tuned :o
