Great pictures Steve, very well down and most welcome, have a caption for the snap with you in front of it:
"Eyes off this little number lads, it's mine, all mine, and yes, the box trailer is out front and it will all fit snuggly..."

Brilliant photos... but I'm crying about how something that was not all that long ago the "Rolls Royce" of broadcast gear is now being given away... I know its progress but still sad nevertheless. I hope some of these will have a whole new life on 6m... at a legal power of course!
Cheers,

Re: ABMN0 going QRT June 5th
Hello to you all,
Well Steve's photos tell the story, yes it went off as planned and the man who had the prvilege to flick the switch (Andy, also a ham from VK1 but inactive) was also the man who commisioned many of the CH0 transmitter installs and upgrades over the years.
For me, it was a bit emotional, a bit anticlimax and most of all it was a tiring trip, I clocked up 1,931KM in the very rough riding Rodeo Ute over 2 1/2 days. I must thank Broadcast Australia for allowing me on site as a visitor and to the local BA crew who seemed happy to put up with "the odd blokes" who were there in the background.
What now? I have no idea but as a group we need to come up with some sort of Early Warning signal for people outside of VK to listen for.
I did intend to get some video footage of the turn off but I could not find the little sony camera in the car when I went looking for it. It had slipped down behind the tarps. only found it after the switch off after pulling everything out of the cab of the ute
There is no word as to when the modules from this CH0 will be available for disposal, so I would suggest the people on the eastern capitials take an interest in this as I am all done doing wild trips to Mt Ulandra for the time being.
I believe that CH0 in Brisbane was a Larcan Transmiter, has anyone approached its owners about the disposal of the transmitter parts?

Hi Peter,
Did they say anything about the strategy to be used for removing the panels?

Peter.
The gave me their best blank look when I asked about that, from what I can gather everyone is wanting it to be: "someone else's problem" So I would imagine it will come to a crunch at some point. It would seem there is still a CH2 TV array up there (above the CH0) also which has been in an unused state for many years.VK2AAH wrote:Hi Peter,

Wonder if there is a Chinook free to do some tower work? Mind you if they take that load off the tower it may lift out of the ground... just kidding of course!

WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN.
The AIT team at a guess will make a scope of works and climb the tower with RPW on the 80KW of FM and lower all the stuff down the tower.
Only riggers get to climb, and tower rescue must be in place.
WX must be fine.
Ice is a real problem on Ulandra according to local tech.
And as you saw with the storm on Monday night comes in quickly.
If bits start falling off in ice they will raise what is called a NITS and accelerate the dismantling.
if another client comes along that will also speed things up.
Contrary to all the scuttle DTV re stacking channels does not include the 0 and 5A.
SO in VK2 should be hearing all these new calls on air??

Thats right
5A was later 1969.
Then it all fell in a heap and WARC 75 failed to get them all off.
CH0 Melbourne went off
Then SBS came back on in VK2 and VK3
In VK4 they swapped Toowoomba with Brissy with aggregation.
And 0 Tamworth with the sound stereo sc at 52.005 that was a real stopper.
So here is the chance to repopulate 6M band, expect droves to come on?
And to make up for no TV how about we lobby to make 6M PRIMARY and 1KW HF trial to extend to 6M as well next year?
