There is a joker on eBay trying to flog one for $1400-odd. Not a bad mark-up on a $35 piece of hardware.

The sales will settle down. A bit like the Funcube Dongle. Once manufacturing steps up, and the early birds have been served, they'll be available off the shelf.

I'm Alan, a Linux buff from the Minix days.

My Raspberry Pi, bought for software development, is very disappointing.

Three Linux versions tried:
Debian 6 GUI kills the ethernet!!!
Fedora No-longer in the Pi website, runs the best
Arch GUI kills the ethernet, very hard to install, past command line.

It will be relegated to a headless box on my network.

Get the software right, before marketing the unit!!!!

I'm about to order a Raspberry Pi (type B) to have a play with.

Can anyone recommend some good books (dead tree variety) about using a Raspberry Pi?
Have already downloaded some quick start guides, but looking for reference books that go beyond the initial basics.

Not a complete noob when it comes to 0's and 1's, but know nothing about the Pi, or Linux!

I have all the MagPi issues, and a few ebooks and stuff floating about on the web. Hardcopy, I have 'Programming the Raspberry Pi - Getting Started with Python' by Simon Monk, which is quite good.

Appreciate the suggestions so far.
I should have mentioned, I have downloaded all the "Mag Pi" issues, but have yet to read them in detail, with the concentration they deserve.

Although, from a quick flick thru each time, Mag Pi appears to be written in a conversational style, where you have the wade through a lot of waffle!
I was after some good reference books, that cuts to the chase, with practical examples.

Still largely ignorant with all things Pi, I see there are a number of operating system variants to choose from, so part b to the question is;
Which variant supports networking / remote desktop the best/easiest?
I would concentrate on going down that particular path then.

I'd like to be able to boot the Pi to run a specific application that controls a USB device plugged into one of the Pi's USB ports, and remote control it (over Ethernet) by a Windows 7 PC.
Once configured, the Pi would not have a keyboard/mouse/screen attached, and would be a remote controlled "black box".

Hi Adam,

Pi's are a bit of fun to play with, but keep in mind they were designed as a low cost educational tool, which resulted in the device having limited processor power.

To answer you questions more directly:
I would start off with the Noob image. This contains a number of distro's and is a good starting point to learn about the thing. The distro are all flavours of linux so using it for getting to know your way around linux is a good start.

As for remote control, most distro's for the Pi allow you to SSH into the box. SSH is "Secure SHell" and allows you to run most of the linux command line stuff.

If you are looking for a way to remote the UI, the VNC might be the way to go. There is a port of TightVNC server for the PI. More info here:

While books are good, having a play is more fun - you cant do much damage, even if you do you just re-image the SD card and away you go again.

It's designed to be like window CE was for handheld devices. So it allows lightweight windows apps like weatherstation ect to run , rather than having a power hungry PC.
