2011 Spring VHF/UHF Field Day

Post by ADMIN »

This is the thread to discuss and advise others of your proposed activity for the upcoming Spring VHF/UHF Field Day.

Don't forget to update your VK Logger /P profile with your lat/lon or grid square so others can calculate beam headings and distance to you.
This is best done ASAP, so that others can make a print out, and take that with them.
(Of course, sign in under your own /P account so that bearing and distance is referenced to your own /P location)

Lou

I was only thinking a few days ago that this topic hadn't been "aired" recently by people wanting to let us know where we can expect activity from.

I will be out portable on the Saturday only, the first 8 hours of the FD. My location hasn't been finalised as yet but will be either at Beechmont in QG61 or Mt French, right on the QG61hx/QG62ha boundary, partially depending on the weather that weekend. This time around I hope to have equipment running on SSB on 50.15, 52.1, 144.15, 432.15, 1296.15, 2403.15 and 3400.15, nominally one band at a time. FM will be available only on 146.500 and 439.000, maybe 52.525. The plan is for a "Single Op, All bands, 8 hour section" entry.

Most of my field day setup detail is available from the FD pages on my web site, eg http://www.vk4adc.com/web/index.php/fie ... -days.html, if anyone needs any hints as to how to get going about setting up as portable. Given that there are only 2 weeks to go, it would pay to start getting ready as of this weekend so any setup 'bugs' can be resolved beforehand.

I won't be out at all this time. I might be able to go on air from home with a vertical on 2m and 70cm FM at some point though for a couple of points to give away.

Call me slow, but I have looked and cant see where to create a portable profile. Do I need to apply for a second callsign ? or add to the existing one. :?
I have a mound of dirt not far from my QTH that I will be portable from.

Hi Guys
Hope to be portable again from Blue Knob QF68ck if noone steals it. Will have 6m, 2m, 70cm, 23cm and 13cm if strings can be pulled tight enough but unlikely.

Cheers

Hi Tim,

It looks like a good new location for you this time.

We will be at McLaughlin's Lookout QF22dm again as VK3ER/p - the bearing for us from you is 95 degrees (+/- a bit of knife edge) and the distance is around 110kms so we should have no problems with all the bands up to 10 GHz.

Running Heywhat'sthat shows that you have a good takeoff in every direction except N through Northeast.

And the best thing is that the weather is looking pretty good for the whole weekend with a good chance of some enhanced propagation.

G'day All,

I'll be operating portable from my farm at Hesket on the northern slopes of Mt Macedon (QF22hp). I'll have 6m, 2m, 70cm, 23cm, 13cm and 10GHz.
I'm just putting the finishing touches to a new home brew 10GHz system. It's a cobbled together collection of components I've been building and collecting over the years, including a homebrew waveguide LNA and 10W PA. I'm looking forward to testing it out this weekend.

The weather forecast is good and Hepburn is promising too. I have a good take-off to the west, north and north-east. I plan to start setting up on Friday so I should be operational by Friday night or Saturday morning, in plenty of time for the start of the contest for a change!

Andy,

Looking forward to working you on all those bands.

We are about 35 kms SSW west of you in QF22dm, so it should be a breeze.

We are also hoping to have some other club members operating from QF13tg which is always a difficult one to work from the south.

Cheers

You're joking  That's a big shame... Tim, I've got a spare FT817 that you could have but I'd be flat out getting it to you at this late stage - I was only in your town last Sunday arvo catching up with a friend. That's how it goes I guess. I might call you tommorrow with another offer for you.

Re: 2011 Spring VHF/UHF Field Day

In view of the uncertain weather, I have decided to operate the first eight hours from John's Hill Look Out near Kallista unless that site is already spoken for. If it does rain, I won't be too far from home!

Equipment set up:

50MHz 100W SSB/CW/FM - Halo antenna
144MHz 100W SSB/CW/FM/D-Star - 7 Element Yagi
432MHz 75W SSB/CW/FM/D-Star - 13 Element Yagi
1296MHz 10W SSB/CW/FM - 35 Element Yagi
10.368GHz 1.2W SSB/CW/FM - 65cm Dish

If anyone else had already planned to operate from John's Hill Lookout, please speak now or endure constant QRM!

The wx is looking like it will be damp on Mt Ginini but I'm aiming to be operational on 50 to 3400 plus 10368 using gear borrowed from Ted VK1BL. I will be using my VK1DA callsign. I have set up op info for VK1DA/p showing the location and other data on vklogger.com.

Hoping to work into vk3 on all bands, including Andy with his high power gear on 10G.
As in the past, I will be mainly found on 144.180 looking for contacts, qsy will be to 432.180 etc.
I run separate logs on each band.
Modes SSB and CW mainly. Other modes by request.

Also will be trying some digital modes. I'm open to suggestions of other modes and bands but I have no GPS locking so digi modes are not going to work well on the higher frequencies, other than perhaps FSK441.

May have logger operational. Phone coverage at Ginini is not good. Taking a Telstra 3G dongle for the laptop.

Good field day fun to all.
Andrew.
