There is one question.

Much like then and now,
Most of All Japanese stations on 2mSSB were using vertical polarization antennas.
I think VKs were using horizontal.

My old memory,VK4ZSH/4 were using h-pol.

Vy loss existed then?

I would suspect that the polarity wouldn't be an issue, same as using 6m on Es or TEP, vertical or horizontal doesn't really matter with that type of propagation.

Oh sorry Awa, didn't realise. Thank you for clarifying.

As mentioned before, thank you for the updated TEP information.

I hope contacts can be made again some day.

 I think I may have just found a way we may be able to check if we have a path on 2m TEP to Japan.
What we then do about finding someone to make a contact with ... im not sure about yet

Here is a screen shot of a live WSPR cam that Kazu JQ1HDR has set up for 6m WSPR. Perhaps he may be able to set something up for 144 MHz WSPR we could look at for spotting our own signals.
JQ1HDR Live WSPR camera
JQ1HDR Live WSPR camera
Here you can see there has been 3 time periods where signals are being observed on the WSPR graph. There is no decode due to the large frequency spead on the signals supposed to be 6 Hz are spread to around 40 Hz. But despite not decoding, we can see the signals on screen via the internet.
This could be handy for observing the occurance of 2m evening TEP.

Advice from Izumi JH1GYE on 2m WSPR if anyone is inclined to monitor from VK4. I have explained to Izumi about differences between afternoon and evening TEP regarding likely times for 2m paths. So if these time schedules change I will advise.

2m WSPR to VK

Conditions on 6m are very good these days.
So, I’m going to test 2m WSPR directing VK tomorrow. (March 8th around 3:00 to 6:00z) And possibly next day. (March 9th)
Please watch and try to spot me. At the same time, I will be running 6m WSPR too.
Antenna direction is south. Power and frequency are +40dBm and 144.490530MHz respectively. Japanese stations are also welcome.

Hi Leigh

For interest here is some of my log from Darwin days:

12.3.89 1140 JH4JPO 5x1 5x1 SSB
11.2.90 1118 JE6EKW 5x7 5x7 SSB
25.3.90 1232 JA6GKW JA6OJV JK6ITL 5x5 5x5 SSB
29.8.91 1059 JF6ILP JF6ASQ 5 x7 5x7 SSB
29.8.91 1107 JF6ILP 559 559 CW
24.9.91 1047 JF6NEW 559 559 CW
24.9.91 1111 JF4OUY 5x9 5x9 SSB
24.9.91 1143 JF6GAC JJ6GXQ 5x9 5xs9 SSB
21.3.92 1138 - 1156 JF6RNV, JF6RVW, JF4OUY, JI6HOC, JJ6GKP, JL6EFO, JI3NUO, JG6NHB, JF6OTS, JJ6OQS, JA6JVE most signals 5x5 to 5x9 SSB
28.3.92 1158 JH4UMS 5x7 5x7 SSB
25.9.92 1200 JA4EKO 559 559 CW

From memory most of the 2 meter contacts occurred after a prolonged 6 meter opening, 6 meter signals would drop quite quickly and 2 would come to life. In most cases after the 2 meter openings the signals would drop in signal strength and we were back to 6 meters but usually not for long - the band would go out altogether.

Hello Rex, do you recall if you experienced the extreme TEP distortion on the 6mx signals before 2mx opened? This was what was noticed each time we had an opening from Alice Springs to JA, 1st the 6mx signals became distorted and warbled a lot then 2mx would do its thing and once we noticed the signal quality on 6mx improved then all the 2mx signals went away. Would be curious to know if Darwin had a similar mechanism or if this was due to the lower latitude at Alice.

We had experience the TEP distortion quite a bit over the years I was there, Jeff 8GF/5GF had seen it too before I arrived but I never put two and two together to associate it with a rise in MUF until chatting with some of the boffins from DSTO when they visited.

hi Pete

Yep, you reminded me, there was distortion on the 6mx sigs that was usually the sign to look on 2. Mostly the 2mx sigs had distortion on them also

FYI I asked Rex VK7MO a few questions about the newer WSJT modes he is using for microwaves like 10 and 24GHz, bands which also have high signal spreading. We think it is possible that some of the modes like JT4F could work for 2m Evening TEP, where other digital modes cant cope with the spreading.

Only way to know is to get people to try it.
