Geomagnetic storm

Post by VK2FAK »

HI all...

I see there is a Level 5 warning of a Geomagnetic storm in the next 2-4 days...

What does this mean?
Hopefully aurora. Most likely higher ionospheric absorption at lower frequencies.

yup but it was the M8 a couple of days ago that is the cause of the storm warning

Thats not correct, its from the halo CME that occurred yesterday which produced a long duration M1.4 flare. You'll note that the Geostat alert was issued yesterday after this event.
Geostat alerts are quite common, doesn't mean anything major will happen, esp only being an M1.4.

VK5MTM Theo,

You can find out a lot of the information your looking for about solar activity and geomag storms etc on the web if you do a few searches all will be revealed to you.
Put very simply and quickly, it means that there is a chance of unusal DX, usually on 6m or 2m bands from signals reflected from the southern aurora if it gains enough energy and or intense Sporadic E or Auroral E contacts.
Try a few searches if u want to dig deeper into it, there is lots of info written on these subjects.
