had an interesting one today. testing my yagi called cq,got a call back on 146.500 which was great around 40 klms another fcall on top of a hill portable. then we qsy'ed to 439.000 may as well get some extra points for the ross hull comp. received him and also some one else who monitors 439.000 24/7 in geelong with a pretty big station I was coming off the back of my beam at low power and he got me 5/9. I'm quite often scanning alot of simplex freq's on fm and quite a few people use them.

Yes, I have 6/2/70 FM call frequencies programmed into the FM unit and continually scan.

Mostly quiet though! :(

Steve VK3FACT, when I get my 4 x 13 ele FM vertical 2m array back up I'll give u a call no problems. Should be able to get through often if your in a reasonable location there. If not then a shout through VK3RMM wouldn't be a drama.

Here is an earlier image of my 2m & 70cm FM array that I used to run. 4 x 13 ele 2m and 4 x 27 ele 70cm.

If you've got that array back up for in time for JMFD 2013, we have to try to work each other. I plan to go back to Mt Torbreck next year.

I should be able to work you from your home QTH I'd say Wayne. Looks like your near VK3HZ, we usually have a pretty easy path between us. Im working on getting the antennas up again, slowly but surely. Will get there soon.

Anyone seeking FM Simplex contacts on the calling frequencies should look out during SOTA activations in VK3. While not all activations are on 2 and 70, on mine, I am generally carrying a 2/70 HT with 146.5 and 439 going. My last activation at Arthur's Seat was all on these two frequencies. It pulled a few people out who talked about the days before repeaters.

Once more people join the SOTA activation fray, we might find the FM calling frequencies in use much more. Could provide VK2KRR some interesting contacts to try to get.

 Thanks for the thought Wayne!
I didn't even know what SOTA was (School of the air ?) but have looked up Summits On The Air. Looks good. And a bit more encouragement to help me in getting 2 & 70 on air again asap.
The Summits On The Air concept looks like quite a good one also, I must read up on it more later.

For anyone interested, there will be some action on 146.5 FM this afternoon at 5:15pm as VK3HRA/P activates Mt Macedon, or VK3/VC-007.

Alert on www.sotawatch.org
