Certainly an astonishing "event"
For an explanation of how and why those signal levels - from 4x1 to 5x9+ - are achieved, and how the various signal "footprints" happen, check out "Signal Strengths of VHF Sporadic E Propagation" in the Propagation & Solar Cycle News forum, here: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=10336

Another Massive 144MHz Es Opening.
Re: Another Massive 144MHz Es Opening.
Hi all,
With the big 2 m Es yesterday, below are two YouTube videos.
Both are received signals from VK5DK to ZL1TPH/p (Cape Reinga) at approx 2883 km.
Although not shown in the first video, sunlight glare on the S meter – Colin was 5/9.
The second video was two hours later and Colin had a weak, but very stable signal, and that lasted for a about 15 minutes – then the Es closed at my station,,

Re: Another Massive 144MHz Es Opening.
Hi Adrian
I was operating from Corny Point, Southern York Peninsula, South Aust, grid PF85mc. I was using an Icom IC910, 100w into a 5 over 5 stacked yagis the centre about 7m high and probably about 15m above sea level.
Contacts completed as follows;
2300z ZL1TPH 5/5 both ways Grid RF65in 3248Kms,
0104z ZL2WHO sent 5/9, recv 4/1 Grid RE79tp 3428Kms,
0107z ZL2OK 5/8 both ways Grid RE89ex 3493Kms, probably broke extisting VK5 record of 3483.2Kms,
0204z ZL4PLM 5/3 both ways Grid RE66dl 3162Kms, did peak 5/5 a little later,
0205z ZL3TY 5/1 both ways Grid RE57om 3063Kms, did hear stronger earlier working other VK5's and was still audible until 0230z.
Hope this is what you require Adrian.

I'm sure others have much more to tell. I'd be very interested in any comments etc. Please give utc dates and times of the first station HEARD and last station HEARD via Es at ur qth.
I hope Adam can provide another animation of this event

Re: Another Massive 144MHz Es Opening.
From RF65IN (all contacts Es)
My first contact was to VK5BC at around 2300z (mid-day ZL)
Then VK5NY 2301z
Then VK2KOL 2317z then VK2BCC at 2330z
Then ZL4DK 2343z (internal New Zealand)
Then VK5DK at 5/9 2351z
Then the VK3 pile up from 2351z to 0042z (with a couple of VK2’s in the mix)
Then VK5DK was heard calling CQ for around 10 minutes (S1 and consistent) which ended 0108z (2:08 pm ZL time)
Cheers,
Steve ZL1TPH
