This is Dereks AIS stats page. From here you can click on 'Coverage map' which will show you where Derek has heard signals from on 162 MHz from ships, in past hour? maybe its past 12 hours? I haven't worked that out yet.

Hi Derek,VK6DZ wrote:I now have AIS up and running, my station ID is NO:874
Currently running on a Discone antenna, will put a 6el Yagi up at a later date( when it stops raining )
Excellent work! What sort of RX equipment are you using?
Cheers,
Rob...

Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
Derek, maybe there is more boats with transponders now?
There is a ship named Bm Bonanza, heading ur way Derek, watching to see when u start to hear it.
I see this morning that VK6APK near Bunbury has a path way up (1000Km) the coast, attaching map.

Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
I have managed to make a 5el Yagi tuned for 162mhz (AIS)and get it mounted at about 11m on my tower pointing just South of East.
It will be very interesting to see how it goes over the Summer

Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
Great! cant wait to see what happens!
Im going to have to do something myself antenna wise this 2m yagi is fairly deaf at 162 I would think, also need a pre-amp to suit.
Its surprising how many Ham stations are running AIS.

Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
This is VK6APK's amazing coverage map from last night (Sunday night)
Still unsure if this is coverage over previous hour only ?
As you can see this extends a very long way, esp with an omni vertical at both ends.

Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
Coverage from Exmouth, Sunday evening, note the single spot way down near Albany.
Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
This is VK6HV coverage on Sunday evening.
Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
Current signal range from VK2GEL in Sydney.
Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
It doesn't appear to be showing on the coverage map for VK2GELs station near Port Macquarie, but he is RXing a ship right out near New Zealand.
Ive also clicked on another ship heard by VK2GEL and it is showing the track its taken and the little black ships along the line indicate spots where the signal was heard by VK2GEL (as far as im aware).

Anyone interested in seeing what Phil VK5AKK is picking up, you can have a look at Phil's AIS stats page here:
http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/statio ... eader=true
Should be quite interesting to look at with Phils location.

Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
Hi all...
Class A sends info out every 2 -10 sec while underway and every 3 mins when in port and additional info every 6 mins
Not sure scanning both channels would be a good idea anyway...as this AIS seems to be all about timing...
no squelching either..

Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
Hi All...
Did you leave it run last night....if so how did it go...?
Mind you , you can expect plenty of errors because of your distance away from the ships...

Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
Phil, are you registered on marinetraffic.com to have your own UDP port to upload your receptions to? They would look good on a map.

No Syncs picked up at all last night here.
Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
Hi All....
leigh....I just ran an antenna program to see what is possibly happening with the 2m beam your using at that Freq...
I used 2m bean data that was already in file...so is just an example...
Gain went from 11.2dbd @ 145 Mhz with an SWR = 2.0
to 1.6 dbd @ 161 Mhz with an SWR = 10.0
The interesting thing is ....the F/B ratio went from + 18 db @ 145 Mhz to - 7 db @ 161 Mhz
Might be better trying with the bean pointing reversed........and just to check I tried a second 2m beam with similar results regarding the F/B ratio.

Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
John,
Thanks for that! Thats not real good then!
I may as well wait now till I have a tuned 162 MHz yagi built up.
