IS THIS THE END OF WIND PROFILER RADARS???

Post by vk3six »

PRESS RELEASE FROM BOM MT GAMBIER SA

Students from Mount Gambier High School will commence onsite at a new exciting Target Work project on Thursday 6th August on parcel of land previously occupied by the Bureau of Meteorology and owned by the District Council of Grant. The parcel of land previously occupied by the Bureau will be handed back to the Grant District Council on July 31st for the exciting project to commence.

The project involves the dismantling of superseded Bureau upper wind measurement equipment (or “Profiler”) and the rejuvenation of the site for ongoing use by the local community. The project has become possible because the Bureau is installing an “autosonde” system that will automatically measure winds, temperature, humidity and pressure in the upper atmosphere.

The students under the supervision of Des Ryan, teacher from Mount Gambier High School will spend one day a week on site, dismantling the Profilers, collecting the copper cable and cleaning up the site. Once the site is restored, the students will use their enterprise skills to sell the scrap metal to use the funds to repair and restore a hut on the site. The restored hut will then go up for Community tender and be relocated. Once relocated the students will landscape and settle the restored hut into its new surroundings. Mount Gambier Airport Manager Ian Fritsch and will play a key role in overseeing the project.

BLAH BLAH BLAH

Is this the beginning of the end of Profilers in VK??

One possible near term future:

49MHz Profilers - GONE!
All Ch-0 TV TXs - GONE!
Full access to 50-54MHz for all VK states and territories.

Sunspots - GONE! due to maunder minimum.

Tain't no Maunder minimum . . . it's a maudlin minimum, the way youse blokes go on

And another thing . . . the only thing "typical" about solar cycles is that they go up and down :P

Every one is different :!:

As i alluded to in a another topic, future 6 metre operators will not know the experience of hearing 48/49MHz indicators blasting across the 6 metre band. At least they will be able to rely on the military, taxis, pagers and other public services between 30 - 50MHz as they will not move for a long time.

With all these services closing down/moving to other bands, 50MHz is going to be a very quiet place. oooh, i just heard a pin drop

IS THIS THE END OF WIND PROFILER RADARS??? NO IT IS NOT.

Getting back on the topic.

Just had a long talk with MET MAN about profilers.
Mt Gambier was old technology and was experimental.

Darwin is also experiemnetal and changes mode often joint between MET and CSIRO Atmospheric Physics.

MET MAN suggests HAMS become more aware and actively involved as with BPL.

Its a bit TOO LATE when its on the air.

THEY ARE EVERYWHERE NOW

There are new technology wind profilers in the pipe line.

WATCH THIS SPACE..

As I said years ago coming to an airport near you..

10 years back they were at 55 and 54 MHZ, now throughout China they are down as low as 51 MHZ running power levels as high as a TV station.

Adelaide Aiport has one on 54.1 MHZ.

and so it goes..

FYI
.
