USA FM heard in Ireland

Post by VK2SWL2 »

There appears to have been some pretty amazing Es reception in the last couple of days from DXer Paul Logan in Ireland hearing a number of USA FM stations at distances over 5000km, including an almost certain reception of WVAS Montgomery AL at an amazing distance of about 6400km.

Given this, is anyone aware of of 6 metre hams in Europe etc pulling off some equally amazing records over the last few days?

Have to work out where 6000km would get from here along an Es path, probably nowhere with high powered targets unfortunately :?

Richard, this is actually less than distances worked by A35RK in Tonga, to Perth.

04-Jan-09 04:10 VK6OX >> A35RK in AH20TE on 50.1057 CW 529 > OF78VD @ 7017.3km 98°
03-Jan-09 03:04 VK6KXW >> A35RK in AH20TE on 50.1050 SSB 55 > OF87JR @ 6916.7km 97°
01-Jan-09 01:42 VK6ARA >> A35RK on 50.1200 SSB 53 > OF78WD @ 7008.4km 98°
01-Jan-09 01:35 VK6ARA >> A35RK on 50.1200 CW 539 > OF78WD @ 7008.4km 98°
31-Dec-08 03:26 VK6OX >> A35RK in AH20TE on 50.1050 SSB 53 > OF78VD @ 7017.3km 98°
31-Dec-08 03:09 VK6OX >> A35RK in AH20TE on 50.1057 CW 519 > OF78VD @ 7017.3km 98°
31-Dec-08 02:52 VK6YS >> A35RK in AH20TE on 50.1057 CW 539 > OF77XT @ 6998.1km 97°

You can use the VK Logger History search to eek out info like this.
(Since the database backend was introduced in Jan 2008, at least, but that encompasses two Es seasons now.) :D

Richard, try GCM by SM3GSJ at http://hem.passagen.se/sm3gsj/gcm.htm

I have been using V2.3 for many years to make great circle maps for each QTH I have operated from and now see that he has a "new" version 3.0.3 on his web site that delivers much nicer great circle maps than the "old" version ...

e.g. for an 8000km range from QF56me :

(but beware that V3.0.3 is an alpha version ...)

Thanks Adam and Bob.

I didn't expect it to be a world record on 6 metres, though it may well be on broadcast band FM. I was just curious what TA 6 metres loggings might have to been happening at the same time.

I will have a look at the Great Circle software.

Cheers, Richard

Some years ago I worked a station in Cincinnati, Ohio, on 10m FM (using a converted UK 27MHz CB) with 4W to a short vertical on a mag mount from a hilltop in North Wales. A brief opening, but fun nonetheless. A distance of approx 6114km.
