WSJT USB Audio Sources???

Post by VK4GHZ »

I have never really persevered with WSJT before, as I have found it extremely user hostile years ago.
And again now.

I am trying to select the IC-9700's USB audio as a source, but this isn't an option.

There is no problem with the 9700's USB drivers.
I see both com ports (30 and 31 in my case).
CS-9700 works fine.

I can select the 9700's USB audio (com 31) in WavePad, Spec Lab and other programmes.
See:
Audio1.png
audio3.png

But I cannot select the 9700's USB audio with WSJT-X v2.01.
It isn't an option:

What is the secret trick to get this going??? }:[

That is very strange.

Is this on windows or linux?

The only two things that comes to mind is maybe another device was using that com port when trying to get wsjt working, or maybe wsjt doesn't see com ports above a certain value - I see your 9700 is on 30/31.

Would it be too much of a pain to reshuffle com ports so the 9700 is on a lower port?

Hi Adam,
as a long time user of WSJT and now WSJT-x I have never seen what you have described occur, I do know there were some security changes to windows sound devices that stop applications trying to hijack the camera of microphone (malware protection) it might be the case that Win 10 needs to be looked at to see if needs to kicked.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/hel ... ermissions

that link details where to look and what to change, as to why it is ONLY wsjt-x that cannot see it, unsure, maybe the others run as privileged native x64 processes?

My desktop is running Windows 7 64-bit.

The Icom specific drivers weren't initially installed as it " just worked" with CS-9700, and both ports were visible, as per above.

I have uninstalled those drivers and installed the Icom supplied drivers.
That has not fixed the problem.

I have also renumbered both ports from 30 and 31 to 10 and 11. In case WSJT didn't support higher numbered ports. That also did not fix the problem either.

All other audio related programs see the 9700 as an audio source. WSJT-X does not.

Unless I get this working, there isn't much point pursuing digital modes and EME etc.

In Device manager when looking at Ports what disappears when you remove the 9700 cable from the PC? At least 1, should dissapear from the list of ports in use.

Differerent radio I know but I had to do this to sort out the ports in use by my IC 9100 for WSJT-X

There is no confusion with port numbers!
When I pull the USB, both Com 10 and 11 disappear.

Hi Adam
hang on a second, the audio and the virtual serial devices are two different things.... the virtual serial is what needed the icom driver originally (I think Win 10 finds them without the driver, it does for my 7100 and 7600) and the audio devices are a separate thing and need no such driver so lets keep the two apart. In your graphics you show the Audio settings yet you make reference to comm port numbers.

Okay so it is Windows 7 x64 as the platform, have you checked the readme about compatibility issue of the dotnet framework needed under version 2.xx of WSJT-x, you may find that version 1.91 of WSJT-X will run properly and show the audio devices for you? It might be worth loading 1.91 as a test to get some confidence that it will work.

Can you please read the install requirements here: http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1j ... tml#SYSREQ to see if you can spot what your PC may be missing?

So far:

System requirements all ok.

I have un-installed WSJT-X v2.0.1 and installed V1.9.1 (and yes, it's in the suggested directory, not elsewhere).
Still the same behavior. }:[

Input sources available (5 of them) vs what WSJT-X sees (only 4)
Input sources available vs what WSJT-X sees
Input sources available vs what WSJT-X sees
Making the IC-9700 as the default device makes no difference - WSJT-X still does not see it as a source.

Properties of the 9700 USB audio source
16-bit 48k stereo:
Properties of the 9700 USB audio source
Properties of the 9700 USB audio source
Unchecking Exclusive mode check boxes makes no difference.

Curiously, WSJT-X does see the 9700 as an output source (but not as an input source) - not helpful!

Hi Adam,
that is a curly one, so there is an output device but no input device, still sounds like device security even though I know in my head there should be none on Win 7 for those devices. . . Do you by any chance have JTDX installed any where or MSHV as they are both based on the WSJT-X base code even though the look very much different. Dam it version 1.91 should have just 'worked' for you no matter what.
Will keep thinking, will try and query the WSJT-DEV mail list to see if anyone has seen a similar issue.

Adam, could you try one last thing for me, can you go to the folder where the EXE is and right click on it and then "run as Administrator" to see if you get a different outcome?

from the WSJT-X dev forum..

We've seen this problem before and it has something to do with corrupted registry.

Only possible solutions known at this time:

#1 Uninstall USB devices and reinstall -- has fixed some
#2 Install another audio driver (like VBCable or such) and uninstall -- has fixed some
#3 Reinstall Windows -- ouch but always works.

Hi Peter.
No, I gave up on it for now - too many other things on the go.
In addition to previously mentioned, I also installed VBCable, and then uninstalled it.
I also cleaned the Windows registry a number of times, and still no joy.

Although the underlying DSP functionality is extremely clever, I'll just put it down to the fact that WSJT-X has an amateurish and unfriendly interface with the outside world.

Just seen this post. That's an interesting one Adam, and again one I haven't seen before.

Can you try another PC to see if it's able to be seen in there? Tried running WSJT-X as admin? Just trying to think what else to try....

I had a similar problem with my 9700 and a Dell W10 destop. WSJT-X and the 9700 worked perfectly on my Laptop but the WSJT-X Tuner/ALC slider wasn't working on the desktop PC. Turned out W10 had set the 9700 USB output level to zero by default, set it to Max and the problem was fixed.
