APRS Tracking the much overlooked safety web

Post by VK3ZAZ »

APRS a picture worth a thousand words.
using simple radios in my case a Kenwood ht set at 1/2 watt inside my aircraft VH-CTF emulates for $400 the IFR mandated ADSB which cost $6000
I imagine AIS installations equivalent cost to ship owners.

$400 tracking data VK3ZAZ-11 VH-CTF Aero Mobile

the value in the data allows me to track aircraft performance and speed. altitude and track keeping.

$6000 adsb out tracking data VH-CTF

At the moment VK3RPG is cactus so tracking for safety in the Grampians mountains is severely compromised for walkers and hikers.

G'day VK3ZAZ,

A few years back I tested out my TinyTrak 4 in a Pitts Special S2B (VH-TKV) while putting it through it's paces with an aerobatic routine. While it tracked properly straight and level, the aerobatics confused the hell out of the GPS and APRS engines. Since then I haven't had a chance to go airbourne with APRS active, but hopefully once the kids grow up a little bit there will be time for that.

ADS-B seems to be slowly propagating and costs are coming down to the point where Mode S ADS-B Extended Squitter gear is comparable in terms of price to legacy Mode A/C 1090MHz transponders.

Going back for around 2010/2011, Myself and VK2FUNK were using a USRP1 SDR with GNURadio to track ADS-B transmissions - with a simple 1/4 wave antenna we managed to decode hits on aircraft 500 kays away!

Glad to see someone else is mixing up APRS and aviation!!

Cheers,
Matt

RPG on

Post by VK3ZAZ »

Thanks to Tim
vk3rpg-2 is back on 145.175 and gateway via vk3mix horsham
this morning it tracked accurately from hamilton to port melbourne and return for sux hours and as my wife pointed out freeway 110 dear, highways and c class roads are 100!
Stalked and sprung like a blooming idiot.
My excuse just learning in my first diesel powered turbo ute ever, revs 2000 not 4000.
no sub conscious alerts when revs go up, it just lugs along
I wonder if the coppers will wake up that our speeds are tracked on aprs fi in gps time.
just a little bit over
but at least no shock horror when seen going 350 in the plane :o
lol
