The big party of the VK Logger

Post by VK3BA »

G'day Folks,

As most of you would be aware, the VK Logger Forum is about to die... on the 24th of April 2019...

A few of us have discussed tonight of a bit of a bash of the VK Logger, both online and on-air.

Adam VK4GHZ... mate... I've only been licensed since 2008 but via 2KRR I've enjoyed your excellent logger site since day one. It's been the best reference for beacons & repeaters plus the various logs along the way. It shits all over the WIA and other non-active lists. It's been great for us wishing to align our yagi's or for field day sites.

Adam, I accept that it's been a fair bit of work by your behalf... from me... I thankyou mate... you've done a top job over a very long time... and it's from people like me that will miss things like the beacon & repeater lists... there's nothing that comes close that we can keep up to date and that people can rely on....

Adam, thankyou for you work... it will be sadly missed... many of us won't know what we had until it's been taken away from us...

Thanks Adam,,

I think this Wed is going to be a massive wake for those of us that are going to miss the Logger... :|

In southern VK3, we'll be on RBA70cm rptr, 144.150, etc...

Cheers,

Thanks Adam
there is no other platform that gave the content and accuracy and freedom from bullying and crapola of VK Logger
KST wont hold a candle to VK Logger and will become the platform for the bullies to again spin their web, which you protected us from with the code of conduct.
DX summit just a big pond of meaningless spots will be diluted especially on contest days immersed in the million spots per hour syndrome.
if I had a server and the time would take it on board but!
Its over to the silent stalkers to put up or shut up.

cheers and beers

Hi Adam

Thanks for all your efforts, it has been really appreciated. The absense of the logger will be very sad.

Hi Adam,

Thanks so much for "the logger" and all the time you put into it to make it a unique resource.
I have had a lot of fun using it over many years, so I will greatly miss the information and content, especially the forum, the beacon lists and the history, no other resource even comes close.

All the best.

Thanks for your hard work Adam,
Already shared my appreciation via other means, but thought I'd do so again on the forum.

Sad day for VHF/UHF enthusiasts in VK.

The DXMaps "customized propagation warnings by E-Mail" are very good to and gave me some good warnings last session.
You can configure them to filter out just what you need to know, very useful.

Thank you for all the kind comments.

Security and functionality updates on my two other websites, requiring a later version of PHP - the underlying reason behind having to discontinue VK Logger, wait for nobody!

The circa 2003 coding of VK Logger does not work on PHP higher than v5.2, and support for v5.2 stopped back in 2011.

Almost everything these days requires v5.6, or higher, and support for v5.6 stopped in December 2018 (as did support for v7.0 PHP).
PHP depreciation is one of those never-ending issues that needs periodic attention, and unfortunately I never gave it much thought a decade ago.
And then Google wants to dick around with it's GMap API.

Fixing VK Logger was never going to be a quick and easy edit, as some [ignorant] commentary has suggested in the past.
With all the random functionality add-ons between 2005-2008 trying to accommodate various user requests, it became a dog's breakfast, and required a complete rebuild, something I just haven't had the time for in recent years.

Hopefully a viable alternative comes along, with all the VK & ZL centric functionality you have become accustomed to.
I think it's universally agreed, there are enough kindergarten level chat-only sites out there that only serve to fragment an already declining pool of total users, which becomes counter-productive.

I hope to get back into the hobby properly soon, as the all-consuming home renos (started in late 2015!) finally come to a F'ing end! }:[

Thanks Adam,
I’m sure everybody is very thankful for the constant patching, support etc over the years.

Hopefully a working alternative comes along.
Look forward to hearing you back in the hobby soon too.

I do concur with everyone else thoughts also.
Thanks so much Adam.

I too deactivated my FB account for maybe 12 months and true to word life became mine again LOL. It really did become the anti-social network however so many requests from amateurs to get back on I did but keeping very quiet.

Now that winter is upon us my riding season has lessened considerably which gives me more time on radio projects.

Cheers and thanks for a job well done.
