BPL regs a non-tariff trade barrier ?

Post by VK2ZRH »

WOULD REGULATIONS TO CONTROL BPL EMISSIONS BE A NON-TARIFF TRADE BARRIER ?

The UK Department of Business and Regulatory Reform (BERR) has dismissed a call for the country to support the German Government’s proposed NB30 limits to control BPL interference.

The BERR claimed that such a move amounted to a 'product standard' and would thus constitute a 'technical barrier to trade'.

The Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) copped the rebuff from BERR over their proposed adoption of the NB30 limits to control interference from BPL devices connected to power lines.

The UK regulator, Ofcom, has come under fire from the RSGB over their lenient stance on radiofrequency interference from BPL installations.

Broadband over powerline " . . . is a complete misuse of the radio spectrum by an inappropriate technology", says RSGB President Colin Thomas G3PSM.

Thomas vowed: “We will continue to press Ofcom (the UK regulator) and other agencies to take non-compliant power lines adapters and other such equipment off the market, and to put suitable safeguards in place to protect the spectrum from harmful interference.”

Ofcom's view is that the controls that RSGB are seeking would be disproportionate and unnecessary, based on the low number of interefence complaints received.
