Set the record straight.

Post by VK3ZAZ »

For some time now people have been expounding the virtues of propagation stating emphatically on occasions that a certain path can be explained away with maths and prop charts.
Periodically over decades up pop comments like TEC count high, T indices good, the es over Norfolk high today blah blah blah.
At the risk of adding to the non sensical comments by the self appointed gurus I will add my bit at least from my summer experience anyway.

Starting back in late November 1993 after hearing VK3AUI on aurally modulated back scatter from the South south west 195-200 degrees
was able to receive the VK0AQ beacon taken by mark VK5AVQ to Casey that year.
For the record had I not declined a posting to be co-shared with Mark to DAVIS BASE and causing a major disruption to the ANARE employement of CCTO process
Mark got reassigned to CASEY and rest is history
Image
Two years later on discussions at SERG with Darin same deal, beacon and liason with CASEY
and more history
Image
propagation attributed to SPREAD F.
Argue if you like ask Darin and view the Antarctic sounder charts.
Eric VK5LP and I observed Sth and central American TV in 1997 1998 1999 over south polar paths using our two locations to df the paths,
then cycle 24 got in the way and stuffed it up.
Then the early warning last summer by VK3ZAZ, VK3OER and VK5PJ.

I tried with Dale for years to work Chile
and some years onand finally got DALE in the log

I will debate anyone anytime as to how the signals reach Southern Australia.
1988?
1992?
199?
2001?
2019?
game on!

This will start a good debate or NOT

Hi Steve,

Could you please expand on what you meant by "then cycle 24 got in the way and stuffed it up" ?
I don't understand. 1997,1998 and 1999 span a large range of solar activity. What was different about cycle 24 ?

Thanks.

Basically no au es to speak of and no polar or south for a decade or two.
The only two south pole qsos were from PY1 and CT1 to the ice and they were F2.
No one has worked Antarctica from Australia since 1995.
And only last year the south pole path appeared and nobody predicted it would/could occur.

And correct me if I am wrong but when I flagged the NTSC and PAL from south during 1997 -1998 no one except Eric was interested.
And many suggested it was DU or KH8.

So what do your tv reception records show about CE / LU PY TV from that era?

Thank you for the clarification.

My TV records show no reception of south american TV in Perth.
I wasn't looking before Jan 2000.

However via F2/TEP I once received the meteor burst comm. tx on 45.920 MHz, believed to be in Argentina.
This was around 0250-0330 UTC on 17 March 2002, from the north. VK6WD heard it also.

In late January 2018 I started monitoring south american chA2 TV signals via Es from the internet receiver (Globaltuners.com) at Vilhena, RO, Brazil.

I logged 7 of the 8 chA2 TV carriers in Argentina,
Paraguay and Uruguay, that have 50 Hz sidebands :

55.24038 Uruguay
55.24996, 55.24999, 55.25001, 55.25116, 55.25164,
55.26005 Uruguay

There were dozens of carriers with 60 Hz sidebands, a large proportion from Brazil.
Some I identified, from the 59.75 MHz WFM audio, were :

55.24996 Mega TV, Iquique, Chile
55.25001 TV Latina, Lima, Peru
55.25008 probably Bolivia TV, La Paz
55.25071 Calama, Chile or southern Peru

We have only one or two seasons before all these carriers are switched off.

With all due respect as a dxer you know that
Macquarie island is not Antarctica
its is a dxcc country on its own
I am talking about the continent
and in 1993 only
VK3LK VK3OT and VK5NC worked it and all got the seventh continent on 6m
Then in summer of 1995 maybe a few guys in the field day worked VK0IX and NEV VK2QF got all 7 continents
Then in 1998 PY5CC made a qso with LU1 on the peninsula
and CT1EEB later worked Russian base in Sth Atlantic region
and for that he got a stamp in his name and first day cover.
All we got in 1993 was ignored.
But that's VK tall poppy syndrome
Lucky for us ARRL acknowledged it I got life membership courtesy of Bill W3XO and this is stored in their archives.

I think I might have the LU path sorted on or off cycle
DX record from VK3 and VK8 long paths.
and now second year in a row over south pole using Spread F at the solstice as predicted and alerted by VK0IX in 1995 and 1998..
