Ted Powell (VK2AU) Memorial DX Challenge

The Fisher's Ghost Amateur Radio Club wishes to announce a new contest which will commence on 1 July 2015. We have been running a trial of this contest in-house since October 2014 with great results. The contest has proved to be fun, challenging and rewarding for the DX chaser.

The contest was developed in memory of our friend and fellow Club member Ted Powell VK2AU (SK), who passed away in April 2014. Ted's passion was working rare DX and at the time of his passing, Ted had worked 301 entities and confirmed 300 by QSL cards.

The objective of this contest is to work the most wanted DXCC entity during an award period. The winner will be the station who works the most wanted DXCC entity based on its ranking in Club Log’s “Most Wanted” list current at the start of the particular award period. There are also awards for 2nd and 3rd place. There are 4 award periods per year, each running for 3 months.

When submitting an entry, yes, use the earliest QSO chronologically.

In the event of a tie, the winner will be the first station to work the most wanted DXCC entity chronologically.

At this stage the contest relies on honesty, but we do have a couple of methods available to us to check if and when a QSO was made. The original idea was to verify winners using QSL cards but we decided to keep it simple to start with.

We have a few more plans for the contest to make it a little fairer for everyone and make it even more interesting, but those will come after some time of seeing how it goes as is.

The first "live to the public" period of the contest closed about 12 hours ago and we are now taking entries for this period for the next 14 days.

A new category has been added since I first posted back in June. There are now 2 categories... "Most Wanted" and "Top 5". The Top 5 category takes your top 5 most wanted entities and calculates a score for your entry in this category. Have a look at http://www.vk2au.org for more info. If you've worked 5 or more unique entities during the past 3 months you can enter both categories.

We've also made it much easier to enter the contest. You no longer have to remember which was the highest ranking entity you worked. Simply upload your log and the new "Log Uploader" script will find your most wanted and top 5 most wanted entities and submit your entry with a few simple clicks. Head over to http://www.vk2au.org, scroll down to the Entry Submission section and get your entry in before the deadline on 14 October.

Have you made any contacts over the past 3 months? Of course you have! We'd love to get a stack of entries in this first "live" period, so get yours in now. There are also other manual entry methods for those who don't want to upload their log.

Only a day and a bit to left to get your entry in for the final quarter of 2015. There should be some interesting results this time as there were many high ranking entities on-air during this period, including P5 North Korea.

The first 3 month period of the Ted Powell Memorial DX Challenge for 2016 is now closed and entries are open until 14 April.

The objective of the challenge is to work the most wanted DXCC entities based on their ranking in Clublog's "Most Wanted" list, which is published on the contest website. All Australian amateurs are eligible to enter and entering is easy. You don't need to be a serious DX'er. If you've worked any DX during January - March, head over to www.vk2au.org and submit an entry. The website is tidy and easy to understand. Scroll down to the "Entry Submission" section where you will find a number of simple ways to submit your entry.

This is a fun and relaxed challenge where you work DX in your own time over a 3 month period, unlike serious DX contests where you have to sit at your radio for hours giving out serial numbers. It's too easy, and submitting an entry only takes a few minutes.

ALL results are published on the website, so yes, there were only 6 entries last quarter. We've been struggling to get many entries since we started the challenge, so this last week we've been hammering Facebook, forums, email lists and news broadcast with promotion and it seems to be working. So far we have 10 entries (a record, lol), and there's still a week and a half until entries close. Although we're very happy with the number of entries so far, we'd really like to see a lot more.

Only hours left now to get your entry in. This has been an interesting quarter, with many high ranking entities on-air. So far we have a record number of entries, and looking at the entries that have come in, the battle for 1st place is very, very close.

We'd love to see some more entries before they close at 0000UTC on the 15th.
