Slow Scan TV - What Frequency ?

Post by VK2XTC »

Does anyone use SSTV ?

I' want to try some other digital modes (getting tired of JT65) and don't know what frequency to listen to, or what the procedure is ?

Thanks

Brian

Hi Brian

Have a look at http://hamspots.net The digital section shows what modes and frequencies are the most used.

I use fldigi (freeware) which has a lot of modes on it including Olivia which is fun to try, RTTY which is becoming very popular again and PSK which is probably the most common digimode after JT65.

Have fun

Hi Brian, I have to agree with Wayne, give Olivia a try. The ability of this mode to get through when conditions are bad is staggering (and you don't have to be able to type fast).

Brian, here is the perfect opportunity to see the power of Olivia mode, Andy is launching another balloon on Sunday morning and it is going right over your head.

I was able to copy the last balloon out to a distance of 420Km - not bad for 10mW on 70cm and an omni antenna on my end. http://www.vklogger.com/forum/viewtopic ... 847#p59847

I use to be a big user of SSTV but in recent times it's gone a little bit quiet. I put out a few calls during Nov Dec last year and into early this year and they have gone unanswered.
If you want to listen out and see if you can RX anything then look on these Freq's.
10M 28.680 USB
15M 21.340 USB
20M 14.227 , 14.230 MHz .
14.233 MHz EASYPAL digital SSTV.
14.236 Mhz VK5 Repeater
14.240 MHz Europe SSTV Call Freq

14.230 USB is the more common freq used for SSTV and during the month of August the Japanese have a month long SSTV contest so unless you want to get a pile up of JA's it's best to stay away from SSTV during August or you could join in the contest.
My longest distance was into Germany but that was under extremely good conditions and being in the right spot at the right time but VK, ZL and JA is very easy on SSTV.

Thanks all for the responses.

I've made one Oliva contact to date to VK5RM on 6 Meters. Impressive mode for weak signals.
I'll give the balloon a go tomorrow morning. That should be fun. I cannot upload GPS co-Ordinates as I don't have the tracking software.
But I'll give it a go to see if I can hear it.

Does anyone use SSTV in Sydney on 2 meters ? There used to be a repeater but again not sure where or if it's active.

Wayne - gave that site a go (hams spots), put out an Oliva CQ, ran the macro so it sent every x seconds... nothing .
Great mode but no one is using it ....

Again, thanks to all who responded.
