What is a Bridge Detector?

I was given a Bridge Detector that was destined for the scrap heap, because it looked like a fun enclosure for a project. However it would be good to know what it is supposed to do.

Other than the manufacturer name, which is a little dubious, it looks pretty cool. So over to you. What is it in today's terms, and what is it supposed to do?

I'll try contacting them to see if they have any info. I don't think I'll bay $20 just to find out what something does though
